sample filename length limit

anyone know off the top their heads what the filename length limit is when loading a sample? let's say i put a bunch of samples in a folder that have somewhat long names then go to load em up, if the filename length is too long each sound ends up being the same sample as the first in the list (assuming they all have a similar naming structure like:
casio drum kit snare.wav
casio drum kit kick.wav
casio drum kit hihat closed.wav

this way i would know the max length when i go to rename them all

if you know it then it's an easy answer and you won't say rtfm. i couldn't find anything in search with 'filename and length' as the term

16 characters, not counting the .wav suffix

I dropped a load of samples with filnames longer than 16 char. I used a batch renaming utility to trim them down again.

what was the name of that batch renaming utility?...

use automator for mac and run the "renaming finder items" workflow,

I always label my samps and files in shorthand.

Between 4-7 characters including #'s whenever possible.

Kik 1
Kik 2
Snr 1
Ohiop 1
etc.

I especially got in the habit of that when working on the 500 where you couldn't see very many characters on the screen.

You can use Bulk Rename Utility to truncate filenames if you're on a PC.

I plug my MPC into my Mac with a USB-cable to organize and rename my library I rename samples with type, number and title like this (same shortening as a 808):
BD01_AmenBreak.wav
BD01_AmenBreak.wav
SD02_AmenBreak.wav
HHCL01_AmenBreak.wav
HHOP01_AmenBreak.wav

The MPC organizes samples alphabetized, and I like to keep my BassDrums, SnareDrums, Hihats right after each other. It makes it easier when constructing new kits out of old samples.

I use a lot of folders and subfolders, because I find it easier to navigate in the MPC that way.
