utilizing MIDI controller VST plugins in DAW, you can quadruple the substantial MIDI CC power of the mpc.

http://www.tencrazy.com/gadgets/mfx/TcMfxCcMap14.zip

this is a plugin that you place in DAW before your VSTi that allows you to route any outgoing CC to any OTHER outgoing CC. coder "tencrazy" also says "you can also manipulate Channel Pressure/Mono-Aftertouch messages."

"Be aware that you can flip the low/high output values to invert the direction of the CC. Combine this with the "Pass Along Input CC" option (aka "play-through"), and you'll have instant cross-fading action!"

this is an extremely useful tool in general, but especially due to this ability to allow the 'pressure of our pads control WAY more than what we could originally control.

this goes to show that IF A COMPUTER/outgoing midi is concerned, i've found it's often easier to implement a "middle man" software such as this in order to get the job done - often more gracefully, since you can quickly integrate already tested/proven software rather than cramming another feature request into JJ's bulging mailbox.

i'd love to hear what folks (sootyG?) have to say about this

here are some even nicer ones:

"midiConverter2 - Change and convert between CC, Channel Pressure, Poly Aftertouch, Program Change, Pitch Bend, NRPN/RPN, and Note On/Off messages in various ways"

they are GUIless so don't expect to be dazzled

If you press window on the midi field in the main screen, an option box appears where you can select aftertouch out on or off.

Is that what you meant?

By dtaa pla muk Sun Apr 06, 2008 4:55 pm
nah i knew about that, that just allows you to output the channel pressure

it's cool though, these plugins do the trick. they're very cool. i like the CC LFO as well.

ah ok i think i was confused by your first question!

yeah i could see how converting pressure into another midi CC could be really useful if your using software,i haven't tried those plug-ins though

I wonder if when MIDI CC IN is implemented whether you could turn local off and route midi out from the mpc into one of those plug ins and back into the mpc for pad pressure control of various things that would otherwise be inaccessible to aftertouch control!??

By dtaa pla muk Sun Apr 06, 2008 7:02 pm
good idea. here's my take on it: you don't even need to turn local off.
just turn on 1 aftertouch item (like aft filt = 1, so doesn't have to be audible, it just has to be on so chan press is recorded)
route that into one of these effects, have it convert to say CC xx
set your DAW to output that midi channel to the MPC
in the MPC, set CC xx to correspond to Resonance
record your performance. note data is recorded, chan press is recorded/outputted to DAW, daw translates chan press to CC xx, outputs CC xx back to MPC, mpc converts CC xx to Resonance.
boom, aftertouch=>resonance

so sick. so, so sick. think of this: there are other midi fx that allow for VELOCITY=>cc translation as well. this means you could set CC xx to Sample Start, and once again we would have Velocity=>sample start control.

haha yes velocity to sample start via a plug in, awesome.

wouldn't you have to turn local off to stop notes triggering twice though?

someone should design a little hardware midi converter.. hmm im wondering if phillip rees already does one, im going to check..

check this out ,this might do the job
http://www.midisolutions.com/prodepp.htm

$189 though unfortunately :(

"wouldn't you have to turn local off to stop notes triggering twice though? "
Ha ive just realised that the plugin wil be able to filter out the notes..duh!

i just did an experiment to test for latency, and i found that i had a 2 tick latency. very easily compensated for via using QLINK as TC (shift timing)

here is another example of where multi-timbrality would explode EVERYTHING

yeah, i have to agree with this. i would rather have JJ focus on just getting as many MPC parameters responsive to CC as he can, & then we can handle all the funky MIDI processing externally, either in a DAW or with a hardware box like the one mikolo showed us.

recording midi CC's in grid edit, then routing the CC's to internal MPC parameters... that'll be POWERFUL stuff, provided JJ can get a lot of things CC responsive in the OS.

Has anyone seen or used the Bitstream 3x midi controller?
im thinking of getting this for when jj brings the midi dopeness.

One thing that seems cool is you can map multiple cc's to one slider, so you can control multiple parameters from one slider.

At the time of first discussing midi in i remember saying that linking parameters inside the mpc would be cool, but that wouldn't be necessary for JJ to add if your using a controller like that.

its also got midi cc lfo's : another old feature request that wouldnt be necessary with a controller like this.

arpeggiator, midi filter options too...if it had the midi cc conversions stuff that nym was mentioning that would be crazy....but unfortunatley it doesn't seem like it does.

still looks pretty cool though.

provided JJ can get a lot of things CC responsive in the OS.

I really hope input level, filter pan etc will get the CC treatment along with the more obvious qreal functions.

last year i spent a good deal of time drooling over the bitstreams after i got sent a link

but now that i see all these midi plugins i wonder whether i couldn't just use these instead of purchasing an expensive midi controller like that!

two days ago, i emailed Piz, the fellow who made some of the midi plugs i use most these days, with a small request for one of his freeware midi controller VSTs. the next day, he'd sent me an updated version...needless to say, i donated 20$ usd for his future efforts.

here are piz's midi plugins in a zip file, i highly recommend them to ALL PEOPLE who use midi.

the only sticky part is the "Return" of the effected midi back to the mpc, i'm still thinking that one out. i know how to make it work easy enough but the big issue right now is making it work in the most seamless way possible.

yeah, i'm still trying to decide between this and the Novation Remote Zero Sl. The Bitstream would win except the Zero SL has those lcd screens that give you an instant overview of what each controller does when you activate a preset, which i think is essential for live use. if that Bitstream had a display that gave you that info (without having to wiggle the knob first & check the main display to see what it is controlling) it would be perfect.

one thing good about the Bitstream is that the company keeps updating the firmware in response to user requests. since the thing has originally been released they've added a bunch of new features.
