Controlling the MPC500 via MIDI

So, I know that you can use the 500 as a MIDI controller (am well deep with that, controlling Absynth 4 on my Mac with the sequencer!). However, I want to know if you can control the 500 from an external device, and I don't just mean trigger samples!

Can you cycle through sequences using control changes? Can you control filters / FX etc using CC#s? I've got an MPD24 and want to use it with the 500 in a live environment, but can't seem to get much going on the control front.

It cannot be done. You can record MIDI data and send it out of the unit but you can not control anything inside the machine (other than trigger samples as you have sayd).
