Programming beats without pads?

I just got my MPC500 and I've figured out the basics, but I can't sort out this last thing: Is it possible to program a beat without playing it on the pads and recording the pad performance? Like you can do on the Korg Electribe and various tabletop-synthesizers? This seems to be the place to ask.

If the MPC 500 has Grid Edit mode, then you can just paste the notes using your soft keys and scroll wheel.

Use the step edit mode. The manual covers it, no need to waste time writing it here.
