mpc 500 turns on has backlight but no writing comes up

does this suggest i have low batteries? i just put new one in....

You should try connecting the AC adaptor and see what happens. If the problem continues then your MPC is defected.

Usually that happens when you drop or slam the MPC on hard places, shutting it off while its loading or saving and/or spilling liquids on it while the power is on.

Adjust your screen contrast. refer to the manual
