Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500
By mastasteez Thu Jun 02, 2011 1:31 am
I've converted a song to sequence made up of tracks using my 500 and Reason. I've then recorded this via the 'MAIN' function and all sounds were played when recorded and also after when testing my new sample, in order to create a WAV file (if there's an easier way, this too I'd like to know). Now when I try and play the sample/song via itunes or whatever, only the tracks created with sounds within the MP are audible?

I know I'm being thick and the solution is probably really simple, but it took me an hour to realise I can press the play button in record mode to listen to whichever sequence is lined up, so I obviously need your help

thanks in advance

EDIT

it didn't play fine when replaying the sample. Same question though, what am I doing wrong????

The 500 doesn't record internal and external audio at the same time. Even though you can sample while a sequence is playing, but the sample will not be layered over the sequence.

Try to record your sounds from Reason into tracks on the MPC. Or vice-versa, record the sounds of the MPC into Reason.

Thanks Ill, but I've already to my knowledge recorded the sounds from Reason to tracks in the MPC. Obviously I can still only hear them when it's hooked up to my interface and Reason is open. Do you mean I should record the sounds from Reason as samples and then add them to the tracks????

Apologies if this is 101, but I'm pretty stucj with this shit right now

I deleted the tracks with the internal sounds so only the external ones played yet the sample is still not playing any sound back.

I got the Reason tutorial and it didn't say I wouldn't be able to convert my finished song with both internal and external sounds in to one playable song outside of the MPC.

Well, technically this is kind of in an engineer state of mind, but there IS a way to record Reason into your MPC. To me, it sounds like you're being a little lazy, but honestly, that's something you can just get over anyways. Where there's a will, there's a way. If you want to record the whole song together, your best bet is either record the verse from Reason straight into the ins on the MPC, and then add it at step 1 and it will play with the song. Another way is take what you've recorded in the MPC, and slap it in Reason to record that at the same time. Just think about the different ways you want to put it together.

Cheers Smokey. Believe you me, I've not been lazy, my brain obviously just can't compute whatever needs to be done. I guess I just assumed, if they're gonna bring out a tutorial for Reason used with the MPC, that once you've built your song with the MPC sequencer using sounds from Reason, they could be saved or recorded within the MPC for playback together. If I was going to record the sounds from Reason into the MPC inputs then I wouldn't need a midi cable (as told in the tutorial), in fact unless you use your MPC for live performances why would you ever need to connect the 2 together. Again, there may be a myriad of reasons for people who know how, but there aren't any that i can fathom.

Does that mean that if you connect a different piece of hardware to your MPC via midi, that any sounds made using said piece won't be audible for playback once the song's been created and converted???

Also, do you always need to record your completed beat through the 'record: main' function to convert to any recognisable file type for external playback?

thanks for your time

There's a bunch of stuff that you can do. When it comes to the MPC 500, it's a hardware sequencer pretty much with sampling capabilities. Meaning, if you trigger stuff with the MPC's midi, then you'll just have to find a way to record it back into the MPC, or use an actual DAW like Reason and record the sounds into something like that. Kind of annoying, but at the same time, you have to be creative sometimes in order to get what you want out of it. One thing I would suggest is just recording the stuff that you sequenced using the MPC INTO the MPC. That way, you can sequence and record everything within the MPC. IMO, that's one of the best ways. If you're a fan of using DAW's, try recording the MPC sequences into the DAW. The MPC only has 3 outs (including the headphones) so that's a problem if you're trying to record into tracks.

Another plausible solution would be to record in loops, and then assign the loops on the MPC per pad. Then you can play around with it a little more, and even play the beat live. It's all on how you see it.

Nice one. Thanks for the information and advice. I'll record the Reason sounds using the inputs rather than midi from now on. Just think it odd that this isn't mentioned in the Reason tutorial otherwise I wouldn't have spent all that time recording via the midi!!!! Thanks again

As an aside and for future reference, is this common with all MPC's or just the 500??

You can still have it all and MIDI too, there's a tutorial on Reason and MPC on this site, just look at the banners.

I think you'll have to record the MPC into Reason using MIDI and the outputs of the 500 into an audio interface. I'm sure Reason can make wav files as well. I'm not a software guy, I'm all hardware and ears minus the MIDI, I don't use it because I grew up around DJs that were shaolin monks to their craft, and I learned to sync with my brain, no joke. But yeah, they teach this in school.

this is what I'm saying ill, i got that Reason manual and followed it to the letter but still i'm here seeking advice. It's cool now, I PM'd MPC-TUTOR and he got back at me.
