Recording SM57 into Mic Inputs

I just wanted to know if this works and how good of quality you get? Mainly looking to sample some live guitar through the 57 into the mpc, chop/flip the samples over drum beats.

Will I need a mic pre or can I plug the 57 direct into the mpc and get full volume?

I'd be going 57 > xlr cable > trs adapter > mpc mic input

Most definitely a must if you want a full warm sound. A nice small $30 mic-preamp will do the job. I recorded my vocals a few times into the 500 and with a pre, its less hassle to achieve the sound you seek.

Thanks. I'm guessing your talking about the Art Tube MP for $30? Is it any good, and do you think it will degrade the sound of my real tube amp at all, going through a lesser preamp?

I'm on a very tight budget, but maybe Id be better off getting a used mbox for like 50 and just recording into my laptop. I'd probably get more for my money that way, or could the art pre be better than the mbox focusrite's?.

Well I assumed you didn't have a pre. That tube amp will do if it has an output to go into the 500. I never touched Art's preamps, I hear they're cheap and I mean it in both ways. But Art is not the only company out there, check out sweetwater.com and bandh.com they got tons of pres for you to look at.

cool, I'ma check those sites out, thx. My amp has an output, but I wanted to mic the amp so the mic would have to be the one going into the mpc input. 'I'll try it out with just the mic/amp into mpc first, and if it doesn;t work good I'll just pick up a mic pre or get the mbox. I won a 500 on ebay just waiting on it to ship to put everything together. Thanks for the tips.

I own an ART Tube MP and I use it on my MPC with mics and instruments. It warms up everything I run through it. Sounds really sweet running analog gear through it too. For $30, it's perfect for my MPC.
