Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

I like this question.

A big part of this is what your previous experience was based on. I came from an mpc 1000 and liked the mpc 500's portability.

Unfortunately, I think that maybe a bit too much was sacrificed (volume level of output was ridiculous) and a mark II model could really work if some stuff was fixed.

It took me about a month and a half to be fully comfortable with it. Going slowly through the manual, but also just sitting down and going through the options...

I never had a 500 so my first MPC experience was on my 2000XL in 2001 and I fkn hated it! The reason I bought the 2KXL was a friend showed how the make beats on his 2000 and told me about the XL was much better. I originally came from making beats on an 808, 909 and Casio RZ-1 so I knew this was going to be different workflow. The MPC was irritatingly painful to figure out even after reading the manual over and over again. It took me almost a year to actually get into it.

Back then, there weren’t any tutorial videos on youtube, no MPC Forums or Tutor’s tutorials for me to turn to and learn. I later found and bought some Sample Kings tutorial videos that kind of helped but I mostly had to learn by trial and error.

I still get caught up at times in trim mode. "ST LINK ""LOOP ON" effects the 500 in a way where you can lose start points or it becomes unresponsive getting things trimmed right.I toggle between the different modes. Also, sometimes things like 12Level mode are hard to engage without pressing the pad repeatedly. Reminds me of a woman with quirky ways.I love her though.

i've had a 500 for about two weeks and I feel pretty comfortable with it. I've got a handle on its limitations and strengths. Something that has helped has been going back to samples or songs i've started in the past and trying to get the same effect on the mpc, so I know what i'm aiming for and can learn how to accomplish what I want by trial-and-error and reading the manual.

The biggest hurdle was trusting the 500.I did a lot of research before buying her. I foolishly allowed myself to be discouraged by a lot of criticism of the 500.It's not as flawed as some may say. You're getting a good musical instrument with plenty under the skirt. The results outweigh any flaws.
