Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

so i just got an mpc500 and im catching on fairly quick. Theres on thing i had a problem with though...

I have a few piano samples that play fine and what not, and then a simple drum loop i laid down.

The piano plays fine when the drums arent playing, but then when i hit Play and the drums start to go, sometimes when i hit the piano samples, they wont play all the way through (i have "one shot" on, so they should play with one hit)

Its not every time but on occasion the sample just cut out right in the middle. I have standard 16mb, but i've order a 256mb RAM card. I'm not sure if thats the problem though.

Let me know if any of you got a solution. thanks

sucks huh?

'I have many problems with polyphony...I added the 128mb it made no diffs (i didn't think it would but some do)

I like fast (double-time) hats for some beats but they cause problems.. Say I have a 2 bar loop with kick, snare, and 1 stereo sample as the melody that runs throughout the 2 bars.. The hats make the sample stop abruptly and cut back in a bar later. Mute the hats and it plays fine. I don't really like quaver hats but that's all it seems to handle hats-wise...

...Also, the 500 does exactly the same when I go into Record Mode (even with the hats muted). Exit Record Mode and it plays fine again...

But this is absolute **** for something that's so versatile, and really annoying.'

damn seriously? how do any of you deal with this...how do people make complex tracks if you cant get a simple drum loop and one piano sample to even play together?

no its happens randomly. i have a 2 bar loop with just a kick, snare, and this piano/synth sample thats assigned on 8 pads or so. that piano sample plays back with the simple kick and snare. if i try to play anything else like hi-hats (in record mode or just playing along to the play back) the piano sample cuts out when i play the hi hats. its like the piano and the hats take turns working but can't be played together. the polyphony shouldn't suck that bad, cas i've heard what some people can do with the 500

i dunno if theres a solution to this or if any of you know a way to work around it...thanks.

A way to work around a problem like that is to use a bunch of tracks. One for Kicks/snares/hats, one for bass, multiple tracks for diff. samples ect. If you start to encounter problems Like stated above start muting tracks and just keep building your beat, reffrence the muted tracks often. When your done and ready to record Sync w/ your DAW and record each track out seperately by it's self, then layer all the seperate tracks in your DAW. Working this way is also great for mixxing as well as getting over the polyphonic issues.

Funny, i have never had this problem. I just make shure that all pads are set to Monophonic and not Polyphonic. When you use Monoponic mode the data on each pad is streamlined at interupts just itself and not other samples. I often use the mpc 500 for strings, base, drums and FX at the same time whitout problems.

yeah seems like the track way is way better then re-sampling. damn, thanks for that...i was pretty frustrated

thanks Eim!

Hope mine aren't set to monophonic, otherwise my shot at Eim's miracle cure is doomed.
