I ended up selling my 500, but I was able to confirm that I was correct.
The white over sized ide looking thing in the back is just that...
and oversized ide channel
I'm buying a new one and having it re-painted, and once thats done, ill make sure to post pics.

a friend did this with his mpc1000.

It can be done, its just hard...
You need to find a Li-ion battery with the same voltage as 6 AA's. Then you need to solder contact points on the positive nodes and make sure you allow the negative to be directed to the battery as well.

The lithium ion battery should have theese specs: 9 Volts, 2 Amps (2000 milli Amps). It shouldn't be that hard to do. I am trying to input the arduino so i can get a better graphic OLED screen, but the downside is the power usage.

Through some tinkering and general messing around with my 500, I have figured out a way to put a MINI-ide HDD (not 2.5", 1.5") in to the 500.
I have found leads on the motherboard as well as a few other things that can trick it into believing that it is just another folder on your CF card...
Once I'm done, I'll post photos.
I swear I'm not joking.
I thought it was possible also. You better not be joking..lol.

Yeah do that. I found a converter on my job that fitted, but the mpc doesn't "see" the harddisc.
