MPC500 error crashing

Please help!

Sometimes when I load a folder or All sq&song file I get this error message: CPU Addr (read) PC (883e24de) and the MPC crashes

It's happened 3 or 4 times now in 2 days. I am hoping it is a problem with the CF card and not the MPC. My CF card is a Lexar premium 2gb 80x speed.

Any ideas?

I was having this problem, too. At first I freaked out thinking my 2 day old unit was having a hardware error. Then, I thought about what I had done the night before. What I "discovered" was that I had interrupted a file-save operation, and it appears that I had a partial file written to my CF card. Then when I tried to re-load it, I got the same error message you were describing in your post. (I am not positive all the numbers/letters inside the parentheses were the same, but the error message was the same.)

I deleted the "offending file", rebooted with a reset, and the problem went away and has not recurred.

As I recall, I was doing a large save (probably a Save Entire Memory), and there is a few moments after pressing the 'do it' button where the LEDs stop flashing and have not yet gone "solid", this confused me and I hit CANCEL (or somehow I think I aborted the SAVE operation) which I believe resulted in either a partial file save or a corrupted directory entry on the CF card.

Since then, I have paid closer attention to the saving operation(s) and have determined that there is that "no LEDs on at all" time from after pressing the flashing 'do-it' and before the LEDs go 'solid' (that is, not blinking but on) before the LCD shows the files being saved.

This makes it look like the unit has 'hung up' when in-fact, it has not; just waiting a few moments is the right thing to do, after which, the unit begins showing that its doing the save operation.

This is an amazing capable little unit, but the user-interface software leaves something to be desired, and I hope AKAI will fix this and a few other not-so-obvious user interface things I've noticed, and will post later.

I have been having the same problem.

Transcend 2GB 80x
128MB RAM

1. Turn on MPC using battery power
2. Load / record samples, bang out a hit
3. Save Entire memory to a new folder
4. Turn off MPC, Turn on MPC, Load Folder or Project or All sq&song and it crashes:
CPU Addr (read)
PC (883e24de)

This happened when I was overwriting the folder as I saved my progress. I read here that choosing to replace files on a save leads to corruption, so I tried saving each time to a new sub-folder (1, 2, 3). This didn't help.

If I load "All seq&song", choose the folder, then scroll to "Single seq" and load one sequence at a time it works fine until I hit the last sequences. Loading the program with samples also works, so it's only certain sequences that cause the problem.

The MPC500 has plenty of other issues to resolve, but this one is huge because I've lost a lot of work. No matter how many times I try to load the project it dies on that error, so I have to try and load the sequences that work and rebuild the others from scratch.

Maybe we can explore the common links between us so we can find the cause of this error. Did battery power go low when you were working on the project? Were your sequences fairly simple or super complex? Did they have tons of data like lots of pitch/pan/level changes? Did you have this problem without the RAM expansion?

I was having the same problem today.
I made a little test..
I loaded the "corrupted" session into my 1k and the thing worked with no problem.

Guys I feel your pain. Back when I first got the 500 I was saving projects and then backing up the stuff to my computer, deleting the files on the card to save space. When I wanted to transfer all the files back, the MPC didn't want to know, and would frequently come up with the CPU error message. It is definitely and issue with ALL SQ + SONG but further than that I have no idea. From then on I just never backed anything up!

I had this same error in the past. i went thru 3 mpc500's till i found one that has yet to give me that problem..,. so i think it was a hardware problem, in my case.

I haven't been making music because of this bug. I'm actually afraid to dedicate my time because of the pain I'll have when I try to load it back up and see the crash. I wish Akai would speak about it, otherwise I wasted my money.

I did reformat a card, and did some tests, and it didn't seem to have the prob so far... but still, I'm scared. You know how it is, you pour your heart and soul into those lil patterns, and for it to just disappear from you, it's tough.

I haven't been making music because of this bug.

I've encounter bugs, but not this specific one.

I always save my stuff as a project (this also saves all songs and sequences and all programs to your folder!), you can always load the program and sequence later from the project folder

And I haven't had any save/load problems so far...

PS: But this doesn't change the fact it sucks your MPC's crash, keep sending emails to Akai!

i have sample on a pad, then i go to trim mode, make my edits, go out of trim mode to program mode then "bam" my sample is gone from the pad! & it's the only sample that's on there... weird thing is that the sample is there in trim mode, just not in program mode??? this never happened before & recently it's been doing it... so i have to turn off the 500 & start all over again... maybe i shoud save my sample first?

It got to the point where on the last 500 i had i was able to recreate the bug/ but i since have a 500 that seems to be free of this problem. I figured it was either a hardware problem or maybe the akai 128 ram was bad. i changed the ram as well so it might have been bad?? maybe

Bad RAM kan lead to random crashes in PC's too, so it could be the problem. Or it could be bad memory allocation in the O.S. software.

And I haven't had any save/load problems so far...

My MPC500 just gave me a Internal Error on saving. I was creating a new folder, so I guess this might be the "New Folder" bug.

I recently connected my MPC500 to Windows PC (for the first time) instead of my Mac. I used the remove hardware button, but maybe Windows XP has messed up the CF card?

Hi,

I noticed that in my Songs folder on the CF all the project folders had NO
modified date field, except one. Al other folders on the CF card have "modified date" fields that contain a
date.

With modified date fields I mean that Windows XP displays "modified date"
in the Explorer.

I deleted the folder which had the modified date set, now I can save projects to new folders again, without crashing the MPC500.

I've sent a Email to Akai.

Even more trouble...

Now I'm trying to backup my CF card, Apple OS X reports my 2GB CF cards contains a Song folder with 19.48GB of data, which just isn't possible...

So it seems the CF file system is corrupted!

I sure hope I can still transfer my songs to my computer

PS: Strange all my good project folders are from "jan 4, 1904, 1:19 AM" the bad corrupted folders are from "aug 3, 1981, 2:00 AM" and are 3,96GB each!

Yesterday I was trying to delete a folder from my card through windows. I got an error that the folder was corrupt and I couldnt do anything to it. I had to delete it from within the MPC OS. There was nothing wrong with it as far as the MPC was concerned.

Maybe a CRC problem?
