Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

hey i had been curious about this too, why not have a miniature pad layout on bottom of gui which enables ctrl or/and/combo with shift selection. The bottom pad layout displays all 48 pads so selecting pads should be very convenient, i believe that the list structure for the selection process is less intuitive to work with due to the amount of info in a single screen. The display of pad properties is updated upon clicking a pad and of course, the property window would be (floating or not) a single screen displaying either the selected pad's settings. The problem (or not) is that it would imply that batching is done realtime when taking a selection to edit, this means that it overrules the previous settings making a selection mistake rather dreadful but could be dealt with by having permissions dialogs pop up when a previous pad's settings is being overwritten. In addition you can have the undo/redo and copy/paste pad settings but perhaps a visual clipboard for pad settings is a nice feature, basicaly just a non-existent pad.

yo, is anyone still working on this project???

@Inflict3 Yeah, I posted an update yesterday?

Formant:
I know the list editor wont be to everyone's taste because of the amount of info.
The batch editor has two screens:
Firstly a screen comes up with all of the parameters in a program. These are all greyed out and have no effect. These are only activated on double click, allowing data entry and implying that the setting will be applied. Once you have put the batch settings in, you can click continue and will be taken to another dialog which allows you to select exactly which pads you want to apply the bacth changes to. If these pads already have settings in fields which you have enabled then yes they will be overridden, but if the field is greyed out in the batch edit dialog then the original setting will remain. Multiple pad selection from the GUI for the batch edit is a decent idea, but changing banks would make it tricky because you could be editing pads you cant see highlighted etc.

Copy/Move/Paste pads is a really good feature I hadnt thought of that will be very helpful actually! Undo is a feature I am thinking about. I want to include it, but its just how to implement it that I need to consider. I think I have a plan anyway, but it may be a while. I can only really do a couple of hours max a night on this baby.

I thought ther would be an issue to a different pad selection hehe. In addition to copy/paste pad settings, perhaps try drag/drop pad settings aswell. I tend to use the keyboard more than the mouse, is possible to implement shortkeys to the batch field; like ctrl+shift+a/b/c/d would select either one of the banks ?

Anyway, you're doing a great job, i dont care if it takes a year to finish this off hehehe (i have a life too)

Shortcut keys and drag and drop are features that are coming. The shortcuts will be as customizable as possible. I have literally just had a good idea while writing this post for the implementation of both shortcuts and an undo/redo feature... Definately something to try out tonight!!

i love the fact that you keep goin at this man, props. i know its gonna be tight when you finish it all up.
just a question, i know it was talked about earlier in the thread, but is there a way to listen to the sample with all the tune/volume etc... effects on it? will you be able to playback the sample live with all the changes done to it inside the program?

guyb > how about patched phrases? :)
i didnt see anything related to it in the posts in this thread, nor in the alpha prog itself. a bit stressed out tho, so sorry if i missed out on anything.
either way.. do u happen to know anything regarding how PP's are implemented? cant seem to find info bout it anywhere :|

I don't even know what a patched phrase is! I just googled and found an mpctutor article where it says:

Patched phrase means you can take a loop, zone it and create a single new sample that will expand in real time to fit the BPM of the beat you[sic] are creating. Very nice, although like slicing, stereo samples are converted to mono.

Unfortunately this is part of the OS so there is not a lot I can do. If I get around to implementing some sort of time stretch then you could re-export the beat whenever you changed the BPM of the song and it would do the same thing. For now though, i'm afraid not!

p.s I am still working behind the scenes on bbmpc! I will post a screenshot later of GUI changes.

yeah they are like REX files if you know about them.
The thing is that when u make a patched phrase sample all u en up with is a .wav file, so the instructions on where what slice begins etc must be hidden in metadata in the regular wav format somehow...
haven't been able to find any info about em anywhere, so was just wondering if u had any insight mate.
Had plans on writing some simple transient detection code, ala. autochop with ability to export to patched phrase, or maybe just a rex-to-patched phrase converter.. but figuring out the pp file format proved tricky ;)

been looking at ur program a bit more. it looks like its coming along nicely :) keep up the good work.

That is interesting! I will look into it when I get a chance (maybe later because I am interested now...) When you say figuring it out proved tricky do you mean you got no where at all or what? (and how hard did you try etc).

Right now i'm toying with something which may get some of you excited. It's not exactly earth shatteringly useful, but its a nice little MPC gizmo you might enjoy. Hopefully screenshot coming later...

i'll work on it some more tonight and keep u updated.

the new mpc gizmo sounds interesting :D
