I remember when I used to DJ, this guy at the college station showed me how he invented a way to calculate BPM's with a stop watch to mix records. Nice guy, and I really appreciated him sharing his secret technique with me, so I didn't have the heart to tell him that he was pretty much completely missing the point.

Yeah, I remember this!

Two years later and now I still use the calculator but just on samples that need it but most of the time I'm just leaving the tails for a more organic chopping experience.

Lulz, I don't think I've ever chopped visually...

I still don't use one. Getting too lazy lately. Sold the 500 and don't use the s950 that much anymore.

Heard u also had the MV? But you also don't use the waveform on that one either?

I think the mv you need the waveform more then on the mpcs just cause of how chopping works on that... I mean you can do it by ear while moving the jog for the start point as usual... but one sample recording doesn't equal one pad all the time on that machine.

I got graphic Waveform chopping on my MPC500 and a whole heap of other goodies for £55 (thats about $80)

I simply brought a ussed Akai S3000xl, which i sequence with the MPC500

My set up still works very much like it did with just the 500 only differences really are my programs are now totally pimpmed out but i have to load and save programs on the s3000xl, choppin and also filters and eq(which is now also visual) are also totally pimped out.

Only set back is when sequencing the s3000xl with an mpc500 you louse un-destructive fx (you could do it destructivly by samplin into the 500 addin fx then recording the wet version of the sample back to the 3000xl) and so you have to add outboard fx to the s3000xls multi outs (i use digital multi fx guitar pedals, which you can pick up cheap the other option is an eb16 effects board.)

But all in all since it (the s3000xl) is an Akai unit that is in many ways more advanced then the 500 and your still sequencing on the 500 you dont really louse much at all (if anything) from the normal mpc500 experience, you gain a lot more then you louse (everything you'd think you'd louse the 3000xl still has such as time streching and so on plus many more extras), using the 500 like this is a bit more like using an mpc2000xl (as i was on one the other day and saw many many simalarites).
