I suggested marsh ink.. if you can order some online I suggest it over rit dye... marsh is meant for dying plastic.

thanks guys, i love my mpc, and im gonna continue to pimp it, till it is perfect,. yea, with style flip you can add your own pictures, or design ur own style, thats what i did, i love camo, i guess you can tell by looking at my mpc,. i still need to get black buttons, at 3 dollars a piece, its gonna be costly, unless the rit dye, or the marsh ink works,. i wanna make sure the s h i t doesent turn my fingers black, or wear off first...

just keep in mind that you will have to coat it a few times... and ink is no where nearly as good as black plastic... but if ya got no choice and you demand it then try it.

actually for black you might be better with black grog

ok everyone, i would not suggest dyeing you buttons.., the fader nob, volume nobs and jog wheel are ok to do, but once you heat up the dye hot enough to dye the plastic it seems to weaken the buttons, it really f u c k s them up, it also really f u c ks up the play and record button too,. so yo,. if you want black buttons, take my advice and f u c k ing buy them

Damn, don't dye the plastic buttons. Its plastic, therefore it can be primed and painted with model paint or even spray painted. There's even a sealer to seal the paint.

Did it make them too brittle or warped or what?
The buttons seem like harder, brittler plastic than the knobs and slider.
How did they look at least? Can you post a picture of what happened?

Interesting that it did work on the knobs and slider though. I honestly didn't think that dying plastic would work very well at all. Rubber maybe because its more porous.

I dont know about paint though either. I tried to paint the deck on my laptop because the silver coating wore off where my hand sits (its a cheapie), and I still cant get anything to stick to it even after sanding and using bonding paint, etc. On a model or something that you wont be handling a lot it looks fine. But on anything your gonna be touching and rubbing on, it starts to look like sh!t quick.

Well look at it this way, now you know (and so do we all, thanks for sharing) and now you'll just have to get the molded color buttons like you had planned on doing anyway.
I'm sure its gonna look even better when you get it all straightened out.


BTW: For anyone else experimenting with painting or dying, It just occurred to me that its pretty standard practice when dying cloth to test how the color will take on an inconspicuous or hidden area first if possible. Maybe on the back of the pads, or with just one button first.

if you are planning on boiling the ink to soak the buttons in.. forget I even mentioned marsh ink or anything else..... as is marsh has like 15 ingredients that I never heard of. You will probably gas yourself.

just buy buttons,. heating them up in dye might not f#ck them up at first, but it makes the plastic brittle, and those buttons flex, well if their brittle they dont flex, they break... even at low temps,. if the temp is hot enough for the dye to set in, its hot enough to make your buttons weak, and who wants to sit around waiting for buttons to come in the mail, when all you wanna do is jam on ur mpc, but you cant, cause you were a dumb ass and listened to cats on a forum who have no clue what temp plastic starts to break down at... so dont listen to the muthafuka telling you to use dye,. yes it works, it will dye plastic,. but it will f#ck it up too................just buy buttons!!! one more time, just in case you have trouble understanding me, JUST BUY BUTTONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plastic doesn't break down at a particular temp.. it melts. That is how is got made in the first place. Oh and reheating it just remelts the plastic..... that is what they do with defective pieces (they remelt it and remold them)... with dyes made for plastic you dont need to heat it because dyes ment for plastic sink into plastic.


but I agree, just buy the buttons since you will wind up spending money on ink anyways if you want the good stuff, plus you wont 1) ruin a pot 2) wont worry about it not working 3) wont get ink seeping into your skin 4) wont gas yourself 5) wont stain what ever surface you use the ink in

FYI most of the buttons that you are suggesting be purchased are standard gray buttons that have been PAINTED black. I have explained how to do this on a older post. I painted my buttons about 7 months ago and just now they are starting to show some wear. The key is prep work in sanding them down. I also used an automotive bumper paint that worked wonders..
