Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

Its not a bug just a wish for the next OS,

Dear Akai. How about a proper audio thru that you can hear when in sequence, track and mute mode? (not just in record mode)
Very relevant for a portable battery operated device, eliminating the use of an external mixer when using it with another portable battery operated instrument.

And ability to route it to the FX section ;-)

Expand sample banks via shift key.
I am running out of buttons to assign samples to much quicker than memory on the 128 expansion card. I am left with about 5 minutes of unusable memory after filling up the four banks even with many 4 bar loops. Would it be very difficult to enable shift + a,b,c,d to equal e,f,g,h ?
I have many more suggests and bugs to list but am at a library computer. I would like to say that the 500, other than a plethora of bugs in the os (I think its the OS unless its going t_ts up mechanically) is everything I hoped it would be. Very impressed overall and am looking forward to more support for further functions and stability.

This would be cool!
You could also make a new program!

Thanks. :)
I dont know how to code though.

Another function I think would help speed up productivity is to enable the q-link slider to be used to scroll data in the highlighted field when editing/renaming, etc.
Right now I dont use the q-link for anything. I found the directions for its use somewhat confusing, and haven't needed it for anything that i'm doing so far.
But when I'm frantically spinning the scroll knob and pushing left and right buttons while editing samples I'm constantly wishing that I could simply reach over to the q-link to rapidly scroll from the beggining to end of the highlighted field in larger increments to quickly narrow down to my desired edit point and then use the scroll wheel for fine adjustments.
My last sampler was an sp1200 and it used 2 sliders each for the begining and end of the sample. One was large incremens to quickly find the general edit point and the second was for fine tuning. It vastly sped up the process of timing loops properly by start points and sped up the whole creative process in general.

Also I would like to be able to instantly return to the play screen when pressing the play button from the editing screen to test samples instead of having to back out by pressing sequence first and then play. Again this is another idea from my use of the SP. A small extra step, but cumilativly when working of intricate sample layering would also speed up the creative process noticably.

speaking of Q-link.. guess its been mentioned before but.. trim mode start+end points (percentage)... sample start time + the rest of the easy-mode implemented functions...

edit: did i forget Velocity!? give us velocity please :/

He means just create a new [akai] program and stick the samples you want in banks e,f,g,h in there and change the track program assignment. (I think the only problem is if you wanted > 48 pads in a mute group which is ridiculous)

Aha, he means "program" in the mpc manual vernacular (I still haven't adopted akai's strange to me labels for things yet :) ).

I am not an advanced user yet so there are many functions I do not know how to use in the MPC. But I was under the impression that you can only load one "program" at a time. Therefore I still wouldn't have more than the 4 banks to assign within the same song.
Am I understanding this correctly, wouldn't a second "program" technically be another seperate song? At least in regards to the memory inside the MPC?!

you can have 24 (if im not mistaken) programs loaded at the same time.

Interesting. I'll have to get my manual out and read further. If they can they be changed on the fly within the same "song" that could be a usable workaround.

Also I was thinking about it, it seems like it would not be difficult for akai to add more virtual banks within the same "program" , since there are already 3 more "layers" for each button. If just one of those "layers" could be programed to trigger individualy without the other layers then that would be twice as many buttons and quickly solve any problem with button shortage. And If all the other 3 layers could be triggered by themselves it would be sample pad heaven :) .
(And then I'd want more memory, Lol.)

After the updates you can have up to 99. Try it ;-)

guyb wrote:You don't have to switch programs! They can all be loaded at the same time, and assigned to any given track. So you can have stuff playing from all of them at once.

Sounds good. So far I haven't used the tracks function at all, I've only been using sequences. I'm actually not sure how they work and was confused by the explanations in the manual, so I just skipped over it since sequences were doing everything I needed. But I'll ask on another thread when (which will be a givin) I need some help figuring that out. Thanks all for the tips.

I still think a few more virtual banks would be simpler.
