External Hard Drive Question

I have a dilemma... The USB ports on my HP notebook are dead(no connection at all, no USB power)so I cannot use the USB ports on my current computer for mass storage. Is it possbile to hook up an external USB drive to my 500 unit and if so what will I need? Also I need to know the largest drive this sampler will be able to read.....

don't think there's anyway to hook a hard drive up to the 500. I'd suggest replacing your usb ports/card or it could be a driver issue... Definitely focus on getting those usb ports in operation if you want your pc to communicate with your 500... goodluck

Well, you could get a PCMCIA to USB, if you have that. The MPC doesn't have the drivers for external gear, it can only be used to read/write on CF-cards.

i agree with getting your usb ports working again instead of doing this work around. geeksquad or something, it'd be worth the cost of fixing.

goto a computer store and BUY a PCMCIA USB/firewire card...it look like a PCMCIA memory/modem card...insert it on the side of your laptop, it'll give you 2 holes..1USB and 1 firewire...
i bought mine from http://www.frys.com for like 30 dollares amigo...

works perfectly for me..had the same problem with my laptop..

Ive read in a lot of product description that you can. I don't know if its true but:

"the USB port allows you to transfer .wav files and .mid files or MPC sequence files in and out of the Akai MPC500 or connect an external hard drive."

I didnt write that.... its on the mpc500 discription.

If any one knows I would love to find out how as well.

Don't know where you got that product description from, but the answer is absolutely not. Those USB connections are slave only. They have no hosting capability for drives or any other type of USB device.

Time and money would be better spent finding out what's wrong with the USB on the computer. Damaged hardware? Corrupted OS? Driver issues? USB disabled in the BIOS?

Fellas- props for tryin' to help the dude out, but I'm pretty sure he's ironed out his USB port dilemma at some point in the last 4 years....
