Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500
By Silent Fri Feb 13, 2009 7:14 pm
Hi,

I'm new here, Had an MPC500 for about 4 months now. Anyway too my question:

I recently set up my MPC500 with reason 4 as a controller to set off Dr. Rex and Redrum.

The MPC does trigger the sounds but not how i expected. The pads seem to be in the wrong order!

For example, If i am using redrum, i am on PAD BANK A on my MPC500, Pad 1 sets off Number 2 on redrum, Pad 2 sets off number 1 on redrum, pad 3 sets of number 7 on redrum & pad 4 seems to do nothing! This goes on as i move up the pads, they all seem to be setting off the wrong sounds.

Does anyone know a fix for this?

Thanks a lot.

Silent

(This is the same for Dr. Rex, Pad 1 sets off slice 2, Pad 2 sets off slice 1, etc etc! :? )

You need to set the MIDI note for each pad in program mode.

Thanks eimer! I will give that a try.

Larry Bird, I have it set up as follows:

My Keyboard midi out into my MPC500 midi in, My MPC500 out into my Midiman USB Midisport 4x4. Then that plugged into my usb slot on my pc.

Ok, I have all of that working now! All my pads play the correct notes! However i am faced with another problem now! Can someone help me with this please?

When i am playing samples in dr. rex, to play a slice i have to hold the pad down. How can i get it so i just had to hit the pad one and it will play the whole slice?

Thanks

Hi,

Got another Reason 4.0 / MPC question was hoping somebody might be able to help with.

I have been writing MIDI sequences in Reason, saving the file as MIDI and trying to use it as the Sequence file in my MPC 500 (having assigned the pads to the correct MIDI notes and the samples to the pads). The Sequence loads in the MPC and seems to play, but the samples are not being triggered. I have tried writing the MIDI sequence in my main DAW (Sonar) and following the same steps, which work!

Am I doing something wrong in setting up / saving the MIDI file in Reason? I'm trying to do it as simply as open Reason 4.0 create a new file / create instrument / write sequence / export MIDI file.

Thanks for reading guys... this problem is driving me insane!

Everyone asking questions in this thread.

Larry, if you look in the right forum you will find the answers in the form of a 'sticky'.

edinburgh_bass, why not start your own thread in the 'Production Techniques' forum?

Silent, how to make a sample play as a 'One Shot'? Seriously, after 4 months ownership?

Set the decay in the envelope of the dr. rex to max. Then it would work.

They work good together! A Mac, Mpc and BCR2000 (or any other MIDI controller) and you're hard to slay!

i feel you!
i used to be a die hard fruity guy, untill i started using reason 1.0. i was unstoppable with reason. it had a lot of advantages that fruity didnt. i then went up to reason 4.0. kicked the hell out of it. got some korgs to do some hands on stuff for a band i was in, but the korgs took TOOO LONG to set up and get prepped to start working (via MIDI setup, space issues, sampling on the ES-1). then i traded them for an mpc500 and i havent used ANYTHING ELSE since! only thing that sucks is that, i work a lot and dont have a lot of time to dedicate to getting over the learning curve of using the mpc, so as a result, production falls behind because i cant crank um out like i used to. :(

I agree. I have an Axiom 25, 500, and a Mac with Reason, but I actually prefer Logic for creation. I am gonna try and connect my mpc as a controller in Ableton as well, I've seen it done with other midi gear and now that I know about the midi note thing it will be sick!!! I'll be using my mpc with serato as well. I don't know why all the 2000+ users hate on this thing its so sick and portable too!
