Expansion Port?

Apologies if this has been answered before. I did a search but found nothing.

Anyway, does anyone know what the 50-pin port in the battery compartment is for? I'm thinking it's only for testing and service purposes, but maybe it's possible Akai could someday offer some kind of expansion (e.g., extra MIDI & Audio outputs, etc).

I'm still lurking around TGS, but don't post much. These days' I'm mostly at gearslutz, and recently joined these boards, now that I got an MPC500.

hate to say it but you shoulda gotten a 1000 or a 2500. then you would have the option of jjos, which rocks pretty hard. makes them things into real MPCs. hey... im sellin my 1000! im grabbing NI maschine instead. i cant wait.

I just needed something simple to add sampled drums to my stuff, and the 500 is enough for me. Plus I love the fact that it can take batteries, so I can just unplug it and take it anywhere. I already bought a set of rechargeable batteries for it.

However, I've been thinking really hard about selling the 500, both of my Electribes (ER-1 and ES-1), and my Boss DR-770 drum machine, and just get a Machinedrum.... which I think is better for the type of music I make. Plus I really have to slim down my studio and make room for more modular gear.

Nah, I was just sayin'. I love my ER-1 and I've owned it for 8 years, so I'm not selling it even if I had the MD.

yeah i am finally learning the joys of er-1... and here i was thinking it had to be chintzy but i should have known korg. they always make good sounding instruments. have you ever played with the es-1?

You DO know that the port you see next to the battery compartment is for the 128 MB RAM expansion chip, right? And that its in the manual, right?
