Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500
By chadndede Thu Nov 05, 2009 1:27 pm
I just purchased an MPC 500 and I have no idea how to use it. I had a Boss DR 660 but it broke so I decided to try the mpc. Can someone tell me where all the drum kits are? Or, do I need to load, sample, or whatever? The manual doesn't tell me anything.

For starters, you could get drums from the sister site....AkaiPro has some well......I've also bought some off of eBay.

U know the concept of the mpc right? Sampling drummachine with midi sequencer.
And the manual does tell u how to record a sample, how to save it on the CF card and how to load the saved samples into RAM.

Honestly, I am new to this entire MPC thing. So from what I gather i'm going to have to sample the drums that I want. I'll figure it out using the manual, I was looking through it yesterday and it's a lot to take in all at once.

That's why you take your time and do a couple of pages a day, try out what you've learned on those pages.

Yes, you can sample or load sounds into it.

It's much more than your previous machine.

I see that it is. I'm in Iraq right now so between work and school I don't have a lot of time. I try to get a few pages in here and there. I just got the mpc two days ago and I just want to dig into it. I'm just trying to start with the drum kits and make beats first then get to the other stuff. Thanks for the info.

I've been there myself and there is alot of downtime out there, just take in a few pages and experimentation for a little while everyday and it will start to sink in, take your time.

You should have a compact flash card with the default Akai drumkits if you bought it new.
If so , insert the compact flash card in the slot at the front, power the MPC up, and press Mode buttton, then press the pad that has Load on it ( pad 2) then spin the dial and select a kit to load. Finally press the right hand of the two flashing red buttons, and the kits should load.

If you dont have the default drum samples, then I am sure there is a link on this forum to get them somewhere -

If you dont have a manual, you can find it here

Hope this helps
