Quite a few questions !

Hi everyone, I've owned an MPC500 for about 6 months now but I've only recently started to get properly into it and I have a few questions if anyone would like to help me out:

- when I record from a keyboard into the mpc, I play the beat and record the keys but when I get my keyboard sample I can allways hear the beat faintly in the background so it doesn't sound clean... how can I get rid of it ? (my keyboard is a mikrokorg)
- in a sequence can I change the volume of a track without having to change the volume of the samples ? if yes how ?
- when it comes to effects, let's say I've got a bassline that I want to apply grunger and delay too, and a horn line that I want to apply chorus and reverb to how do I do it, cuz the manual tells me to work that out without the "effects set" on the step edit mode but I really don't get it and it's driving me crazy...
- last, do you guys know where I can get some good dubstep/fidget house wobbly sounds, apart from obviously sampling them directly off songs is there anyone that makes that kind of sample pack
- actually this one is the last, I'm looking into buying a drum samplepacks to do hiphop, dubstep and various kinsd of electro, which pack would be my best bet ?

Im always against buying sample packs. Go out and sample from records or record your own.

So now where can we get some good dubstep/fidget house wobbly records?

Basically I'm asking the whole sample pack questions because I don't know how to sample just the wobbly bass and bits and bobs on say a track like this one ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p5_cQIhCuk ) without having the drums or the other sounds in the background...

I've been making my own sounds with my keyboards and just fiddling with them on the sampler but to be fair they sound well gay and I don't have reason or logic or the kind of software that would allow me to get the exact sounds I want.

Sounds like you'd want some techno or industrial or house style samples and some creativity. Those should be pretty easy to find.

And last question for you guys, my MPC crashed last night, I was recording from a mic into it and then suddenly it just froze, I turned it off and turned it back on and nothing was there, just the blue light and a blank screen, turned it back off/ on holding the erase button to go back to factory setting, and the message "MPC 500 startup" comes up but it just freezes on that... I haven't dropped it or anything and I'm the first owner and I've still got the bill so what should I do ?

Sorry to hear about your 500. Do you have the 128 memory expansion? I've heard that if it becomes unseated or goes bad that it causes problems like that. If you have the mem expansion inside try taking it out and rebooting. Also try booting without the CF inside. If those dont work I'd also try putting the OS updater from the Akai website on the CF and see if it will boot to that.

@robthom: the reason of this problem is the expansionboard???
i have the same problem (before my mpc totally crash)...

@ Bodymachine, I cant tell you what it is exactly of course, but the memory expansion has often been the problem for many users here.

Assuming that the actual base machine is not damaged, there are only a few things it could be.
A corrupted OS in the internal flash ram,
a bad memory expansion,
or possibly although unlikely a bad CF card might be screwing things up.
So go down the line and try to eliminate all those possible causes.
If the cause is not any of those removable/upgradeable possibilities, then the core machine could be damaged. But that also seems unlikely without somebody really abusing it IMO, so try those three things first.

I would think that you'd be better off making this kind of music with a synthesizer than a sampler. Of course you could imitate any sound with a sampler, but you wouldn't have the same amount of live sound tweaking abilities that you would have with a tone generator.
I think the closest you could get with a sampler is sampling those types of sounds and then imitating it. I suppose with a larger MPC and an outboard processor you could knob tweak the sounds through individual outputs, but the 500 only has the stereo out so you'd have to tweak everything together. Well unless you laid everything down track at a time into a multitrack.

Of course I would never say never, restrictions can become strengths just like a tb303.

I agree with Robthom. I use a Juno 60 and produce the same type of sounds. The Korg application for the Nintendo DS can also make these types of sounds for a fraction of the cost (although from experience, the Juno's sounds are muchmuch richer)

I sampled some different tones in various keys and used the 500 to try and replicate what I've done on the Juno , but wasn't too sucessful. It was pretty tedious trying to get it to sound right, much faster with a synth.

i tend to think that using samples of synthesised waves is a really really limitative idea... i used to HATE it when theyd put some synth sounds with a beat pack... its really limited...

now of course u can make a banger out of it... yet, noone can front : if u can make a banger out of that.. its not because its a dope technique... its because you are dope.
