Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

Hi guys, one of these days I saw a trick of "auto-chopping" on the MPC2000 on a youtube clip and I though that it was possible to do the same trick on the 500. I don't know if anyone posted it before, the vid @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFXVl4BWp54

Basically, it consists of going to the mode-program and setting the velocity>level to 0 (default is 100), turn the velocity>start to 100 (default is 0), and when you 12 level a sample, it creates, not the same sample with diferent volume, but the same sample with diferent start points across the 12 pads. I wasn't tooooo excited because I predicted that by having 12 and not 16 pads, the chops won't start at the usually desired time (even with the 2000 vid I think that they don't start that way either), which is true, BUT I discovered that it's a good trick to be used with some types of samples, like background sounds, some synths or strings. The good thing is that it's so quick to do this, that you won't loose any time with the "programing" process, you can just hit the 12 levels button and see if anything goes well...

Hope it's useful/new to anyone ;)

Peace,
Stereo Tipo

....and I guess if you trim your samples as 1&2&3&4&1&2 instead of 1&2&3&4 the trick you found will end up giving you Quarter/chops...

Yeah, that's what I thought today while going to work...but then again I recall that yesterday when trying this trick, the 12th and 11th were almost at the same start point, so i guess that's not exactly like that. But good thinking ;)

Anyone else tried or gonna try?

Those that know me can skip this 'cause you know

I tend to chop with a calculator at hand. First, I sample a piece off vinyl, then I chop and trim the first bars then extract it as a new sample. The number that appears for the End point will be the number I'll be working with. So if the sample ends at 3600 then I can just chop up the rest with that number or multiply or divide it by 2, 4, 8, or 16. To create 3/4 sigs on chops, then multipy or divide by 3, 6, 9, or 12.

I explained it in detail on another post, can't remember where, but thats the formula.

Yeah, that's the "normal" and more precise way, its the method that I use everytime to chop! I was just pointing out that for some types of samples, it's cool to see some chops appear with a hit of a button. Not a replacement technique, just a quick add-on to our regular 1/4 chops, that's all :)

Brilliant, these sort of tricks make forums worth browsing.

Yes, that was what I tought also. But by the same logic, it would work well with a 2 bar (4/4 time) with 16 pads, but I tried it with the 2000xl and it didn't go as I expected. It seems that the first 2-3 pads use almost the same start point (maybe the velocity distribution isn't even across the 16 pads....anyone know anything about this??? If that's the reason, then if we could arrange the velocity distribution to 127/12, it would go perfect with 1 bar+3/4 bar samples..! Just an idea...)

Adjust the default level in the program section for the sample?

I know that's not what you want to do though :P

Side note... found a weird issue when using full level with my Virus... for some reason full level causes the Virus to go bananas... need to investigate further to see where the issue is.

Virus? Don't get it...

One thing I don't understand (and did a post about it months ago) is why, when 16 leveling a "note on" sample, we can't play two pads at the same time. Like, if I press pad 6 for a note, and then want to press pad 7 for a upper tone, it plays the two, but when I release the pad 6 and continue pressing pad 7, it stops not only the pad 6 note but the pad 7's also. I mean, I get it why it happens, I guess since it's a "note on" sample, the MPC doesn't allow that the same sample could be played like poly....but it's a thing that they could thought of, when developing OS...this happens not only on mpc500 but on 2000xl also..

Sorry, Access Virus TI synthesizer...

Are you 16 Leveling Velocity or Tune?
