i had a spair encoder from a mpc2000xl and decided to install it on the 500..it works,it actually feels more solid than the 500 encoder....you can actually replace the datawheel now without having to open the 500,as the plastic wheel sits on top of the casing instead of underneath it.

just a tip

I sure would like to see some pics of it and some more details about how you installed it.

The data wheel has always been the most problematic part of the 500's input assembly along with the directional multi button IMO.

I finally had to resort to crimping the metal sleeve down on the spinning shaft to get it to stop wobbling and skipping while scrolling but I'm not sure if thats going to last so I'd be interested in how to replace and preferably upgrade it.

Thanks.

i haven´t made any pics of it..

u can get the encoder at mpcstuff,i believe the one on the 1000 is the same as the 500.

the xl encoder is by far less wobbly.

I removed the casing, unscrewed the board on wich the wheel is located, pulled it up and unsoldered the old encoder. than i soldered the xl encoder on it.

screwed everything back in place, put the casing back on without the wheel and finally put the wheel back on.

If you´re not good at soldering (its not as easy as it looks) you can also clean out the 500 encoder with a few drops of white spirit on a qtip..this helps to prevent it from data skipping. Believe me the white spirit does magic.

Me like white spirit.

I replaced my data wheel with a knob from an oven, it sticks out of the 500 about 3/4 of an inch but its sturdy and I twist the knob like a radio dial so no need to press with pressure against the data plate.

am watching this thread with interest...

(I recently saw the larger style knob on mpcstuff and wondered about purchasing)
