pads wont play

Ive started the beat making booklet on my mpc 500. and from the get go it will play the sequence tracks that i was given from purchasing the booklet but it wont play the individual sounds on the pads that the booklet instructs to load on page 36. am i missing something?

Is the [FULL LEVEL] BUTTON ENABLED?

yes it is. it played the sequence but not the individual pads
