How to fix my wonky data wheel ?

Easy,

I recently purchased a second-hand 500 and so far, I'm lovin' it!
However, my data wheel is starting to SERIOUSLY get on my chebs*

* bewbs

After about 3 rotations the wheel seems to 'sink' down slightly into the unit and I have to push pretty hard to switch between options or pull the wheel back up, only for the issue to happy again after a few minutes - this will not do!

I've taken the cover off the 500 and it appears that the 'Jog Wheel Post Encoder' is at fault... bugger.

So, I believe I have two options...

1/ Learn how to solder / replace the encoder - If I do this can I use a generic 'encoder' or does it have to be an AKAI one ?
2/ Bodge it - I know there's a post on here about putting foam under the wheel, but I don't know if that will work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Its best to do it right, I would go to mpc-stuff.com and get a new encoder and solder it. If you don't know how to solder, practice on junk radios or electronic toys until you get a feel. A new place mpcworld.com might have it as well.

I do know that an old member Bedouin, had that same issue and couldn't find an encoder for the 500. So he bought an encoder for the MPC2000 and it worked like a charm. Only thing wrong was that it stuck out a little from the unit but worked fine.

Cool man, thanks for the reply. Had a feeling I'd need to solder it - always wanted to learn how to do it actually, so I guess now's the time. Good should on MPCworld as well.

I ha exactly the same problem, solder it up!

what about the 4 cursor buttons? my bottom cursor button is fvcked! i have to hold and almost beat that damn thing to make the mpc scroll down.

am i gonna have to open this thing up and do some tech work on it or just buy another cursor?

Sounds like you might have some dirt or maybe someone spilled soda if its second-hand. Try buying some electronic cleaner and not the air dust cleaner type, I'm talking the liquid spray type. You can get it at your local hardware store or Home Depot and Lowes has them at the electric and lights section. All types of brands.

Open it up and spray out the filth. Then let it dry for an hour or two. If that doesn't work then its a faulty tact switch.

I have wanted one for a while and found a used MPC 500 for pretty cheap $200 but the data wheel is busted and doesn't work, so I am going to try and get it for even less. From messing with it I think that is all that is wrong but wasn't sure how to use the slider on the 500. I tried it similar to the way it works on my 2000xl to change data but it didn't do anything (going to check the 500 manual now to see if I used it right and/or if it can even be used to change the data like on the older MPCs).

I looked on MPC-stuff and found this piece and think it is the right one to get to replace and fix the data wheel. Is this correct?
