muting drums for an instant

ive been using an mpc 500 for a couple of years now and i record my beats and do all the sequencing on my mpc, one thing i have never figured out is how to mute your drums just for an instant not for a whole loop, its very common in hip hop songs, is this possible on the mpc 500 or do you need to do this on a software

There's a track mute feature. I even think it has a dedicated button. You can also build a song length sequence and delete the drumnotes in step edit mode manually.

yep track mute is where its at, just make sure you put your drums on a separate track. you might even want to put your kicks, snares, and hats all on their own track, for even more flexibility and variation. If you drop out the entire drumbeat at once it might sound a bit awkward, try dropping the snare and then later the kick and or drop the kick first and experiment with that.

but does this work while recording? i mess around with track mute when im just playing a sequence but it doesnt work when im actually recording the beat

Yeah I never understood how people got that to work whilst recording. Instead I just make copies of my drum sequences and drop out the hits I want. Doesn't make the beat making process much longer.

Track mutes are good to get an idea of where the mutes sound ill and then manually go in and drop them out IMO

Yea Ideally I think track mutes work best if your recording your beat into software or someother medium.

i dont think the mpc 500 can record your track mutes, but i might be wrong.

the mpc 1k can do this im pretty sure.

B) yes, on 1k & 2500 you can record track mutes.

I used to do my trackmute drops live while I was recording the beat into cubase.

Nowadays I just track out the beats with everything unmuted, have the mc rhyme over it and use the automation in cubase to mute my sounds. I like to arrange my beat around the mc's lyrics.
So I only use the trackmute feature just to find out what sounds nice or to make a 'demo' version of the beat for in the pitch.
