Can the MPC 500 do that?

Hi!

My question is how many minutes max can a sample length in a pad be?
I used my Roland 404 more as a digital recorder and trigger. I sampled full songs about 6 minutes into pad and played them all like a mixer. Can the MPC 500 do that? Or is it more of a sample chop, one shot sample play machine?

yeah, more of a 1 shot type of thing... the mpc is limited by how much ram the machine has... which is dedicated entirely to sample time. So, on it's own, 16 megs... that would be under 2 minutes of stereo... but over 3 minutes of mono.

then if you have the max ram expansion it brings the machine up to 128 megs of ram which winds up being like over 10 minutes of stereo and over 20 minutes of mono.

those times are estimates... figuring that a 5 minute wave file in 16/44 (which is what that mpc records in) is about 50 megs..

It's more of sample play machine. Of course it's possible to trigger song length samples, because there is no maximum sample length for a pad. Just as long as the RAM can handle. But the 500 was not designed to do that. MPD with a laptop might be a better option.
