Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

Hiya, guys and gals!

I bought a second hand MPC500 from Spain two months ago and now I finally have time to start using it.
(256MB RAM and 4Gb CF-card in it)

I carried the bugger with me all the way to North Europe and now it seems that I cannot get any sound out.

I get the metronome sound out, but if I press PLAY START, I hear nothing.
I am using only the headphones at the moment due to restrictions with the flat mates.

I tried the ERASE/UNDO -button with start up, but no help.
(Also the start up says only 16MB RAM?)

I'm such a newbie with these, as I am a vinyl collector and I want to start using these records for something else than playing too.. ;)

Previous owners has loaded and made stuff with this and thus I would not like to erase everything, but if that is not possible, I'll do that too.

Any help is much appreciated, I already went through 50 pages of the forum and did not find suitable topics..
Thanks in forehand and keep on rockin'. :smoker:

It's a sampler, you have to sample sounds into it, in order for it to make sounds. Play Start is to play your sequence. Did you make a sequence? If the previous owner had stuff already made, chances are it's on the CF card and you will need to load the sounds and sequences in order to hear them. Read the manual it will help you.

Thanks Wal, that helped actually and now I feel like an idiot. :)

I got so confused of the Quick Guide's Demo Song -stuff that I freaked out.
Up, up and away!

things a New mpc500 User should know:

you have to bang the pads quite hard or use the full level button.

when you save a project you have to put it in a new folder otherwise it overwrites the. all file.

"play to" and "play from" in trim are your friends.

when you save to internal memory it basicly takes a snapshot of the current state of the mpc memory.

not all CF cards above 1gb will work.

you can use regular PC sodims to expand memory but you need the right kind.

there are programs that let you chop samples on a computer. mpcmaid is good. shuriken beat slicer is fantastic but is only for Linux nerds.

you can't change sequences or control mutes via MIDI, sorry. no triggering sequences via pads either.(but you can change sequences by selecting sequence number, then holding numeric and using the pads to enter numbers in an mmt8 kind of way)

no 24 bit wav support.

you can record the main out!

you should update the the latest OS.

have fun!
