Why is there number 1 to 12 underneath the LCD screen

So a funny little question;
Why is there number 1 to 12 underneath the LCD screen on the MPC500?
As far as I've seen there are no screens that has information on all 12 pads next to each other, like the mixer section on 16pad MPC's.
Also, the numbers do not perfectly line up with the LCD positions...

Lamp is correct. Pg 54... It's the track status field to 'M'ute or 'S'olo a track.

Damn, must be getting blind...haha
Solid proof i should use my mpc500 a bit more often
