Dumbest question ever - Where is "pad play" mode?

I can assign a loop to a pad, press Play, and hear the loop, but hitting the pads produces no sound at all. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I was able to play the pads last time I messed with the 500 a few months ago, though the sound from the pads was way more feint than I would like, but now there's nothing. There has to be some simple thing I haven't done, like finding the right mode or something.
