MPC500 with Field Recordings?

Hey all,

I'm from an ableton live/logic background, i like to mess with field recordings creating experimental soundscapes/rhythms and such.

I'm soon off on a long trip to Tibet to do some of this work. Normally i would just take a portable recorder and a bunch of flash cards and process them when i got back. Now discovering the mpc500 with its battery power has me intrigued.

could actually do some of my sample freaking on the go? and drawing inspiration from the journey...

how long a sample can the mpc500 handle? can i crop samples using the machine?

would i be able to use samples directly from my Zoom H4 portable recorder (in wav format) with obviously a SD to Compact flash converter?

Is any of this possible?

Yes.

you can crop samples too! but not graphically, you have to do it with numbers by ear. i just got a 500 and love it so far, i dont know why everyone hates on it, i think its grand! i havent mastered it yet lol, just learning how to record sequences today

if u get the upgrade for ram in it (128mb), u hav about 10 minutes of wav space in it. so it can load up to about 10 minutes of sound, or u can sample for over 10 minutes in sound (stereo sound, in mono its about 20 minutes of wav sound if im correct). this is from wut i know caus i loaded sooooo many sounds in my mpc, over 300 of kicks snares hihats latin percussion etc, and after loading the samples, i checked to record a new sample and it said i had over 9minutes of sampling time. i hope thats enough for u... it definitely is for me!

cheers for the replies fellas, picked one up... slowly getting thru the manual and figuring the shit out... seems sweet so far.... wish somebody would write a tutorial for this thing tho, seems we got the only mpc missing out.
