I have been producing hiphop for 15 years - started on a Commodore Amiga and have been using Cubase on a PC for last ten years - just recently wanted to get away from sitting on front of computer.
Because of the price I bought an MPC500 last week. Read lots of mixed reviews which seemed to be split between existing Akai users who seemed to think it was an inferior product - First time Akai users who loved it and some who felt it was hard work.
As I first started making music on freeware trackers on an Amiga its not new to me to make music without lots of visual aids like you get nowadays using computer programmes.
Anyway enough about me - my first thoughts on the MPC500 is that i love it - I havent got to much into the sequencing side yet but am finding trimming looping and time stretching samples quite enjoyable and much easier than many seem to find it - and it feels good to rely on my ears rather than on a computer screen - I downloaded the manuals before buying so read up on quite a bit of it - and i think the menus are ok fairly well set up and easy to use
I am totally happy I spent the money - which in my opinion is excellent value - as I was saying to the guy in the store i bought it from - it cost the same price as I paid for a Boss DR660 drum machine about 10+ years ago
