I'm gone, here's why

I was considering getting the 500 to get back into some House music making fun, but I just downloaded the SP 555 manual and scoped out the most important feature for me, which is quantizing. They have shuffle quantize with a variable rate. With the velocity pads, roll button, shuffle quantize, it's all I need... pretty much a sampling drum machine, IMO... assuming it all works. Goodbye, Akai!

is that different than the shuffle quantize (swing) on mpcs?

mpc's are the kings of the drum machines!

all those functions and a hole lote more are featured in the mpc 500.

If its the price tag you wurry about just get a used mpc 500

Roll(as I understand it) is just their(Roland) way of saying note repeat, so we have roll on our mpc's. :D

There are more than a few reasons to go with the 555 over the 500 for doing techno/house music. Quantize is NOT one of them.

Applying and layering wicked effects in realtime, capturing full loops on the fly, and interfacing with turntables for crazy effects warping madness is what the 555 is for.

I have the sp-404, which seems to have the exact same sequencer that the 555 is sposed to have. It leaves a lot to be desired. Perfect for live playing, but no step edit and very limited functionality for creating full songs.

The SP-555 looks like a nice companion to an MPC. I think most Roland and AKai gear fits together nicely, as if the companies made a deal about that. I don't know about working stand-alone with an SP-555 though.
