Looping a sample

How do I loop a sample without sequencing it first.
I have followed the instruction in the users manual and I must be omitting something.

you have to sequence it.

load your loop, and estimate how many bars, then hold play/start, and record and it should count off the beat, then push your pad when the loop starts and mess with it and find the right tempo from there.
