They allow you to control sounds. Hince controller. But ne ways most people just use them for playing sounds in Software or either to play sounds from hardware pieces. U can use them for a variety of reason. Just as long as it has a MIDI out u can use it wit any device that has MIDI I/O. Some boards have USB so u can connect them directly to your computer without the need of a midi interface. Read up below.
