mpc 500 question

I just bought a used mpc 500, and it comes with the default CF card that automatically loads. The samples seem to load fine, except one thing. when I record a sequence, you can't hear anything from the pads when i record it, but when I stop it and play it back, I can hear it fine. Also, even though the samples are loaded, i cannot hear the pads when I play them, only when I record them.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks

You are doing nothing wrong man. It's just your MPC settings.

Check if the pad to sampler feature is switched on/off (look it up in MIDI/Sync Mode: press Mode + pad 7). Some people switch it off to be able to play sounds from MPC using a Midi Keyboard.
