I think kids have to realize that when making beats, especially sample beats, most of the "production" time is spent on searching for, finding, recording and editing samples. I gues most people rather step through all their presets and take what is cool instead of doing a bit of thinking like "what do I want the joint to sound like". Actually dealing a bit with synth programming can get you where you wanna go, without buying all the synths available on the market.
And one thing concerning so called "producers": The first time you can really call yourself a producer is when you spotted a musician (be it a guitar player or a singer or whatever), convinced him or her of working with you and succeeding in motivating him or her to do a TOP performance for you in a recording session. If that's what you've achieved besides making the beat then you're a producer!
Just my 2 cents!
