I had the mpc2000xl and really liked it. The only thing that set me back as far as flow was (to my knowledge) there is no way to track guitar or other live instruments like you would a midi patch. I just got the roland mv8800 but have to tell you that I miss the mpc. My question is can you live record guitar or other instruments on a beat while still hearing the beat your tracking? Also if you can how many audio tracks can you have?

Both the MPC 5000 and MV can do this. The MPC 5000 gives you 8 tracks of hard disk recording (80 gigs). The MV gives you 8 tracks of recording to RAM (512 mbs).

To use the MPCs hard disk track, you create one or more sequences and then arrange them in Song Mode. Then you can record your guitar directly into the hard disk recorder. Please note that HD tracks only works with song mode.

Your sequences can be placed in the order of your choice in a song. In song, thats where you will do your HD recording. You can tweak or mix your sequences and record and mix hd tracks (both with automation and effects) by simply toggling back and forth between those modes. You can't be in sequnce mode and record hd tracks though if that's what you mean. In the end you can mix it all down to a 24 bit stereo .wav file. And since this in real time you can still record the input (with effects) while this is happeneing as part of the final mix.

When you're in the main window, where you create your sequences you can also sample live, i.e. the sequence plays and you can record a sample. That's how I record basslines from my vintage analog synth since it has no MIDI.

Maybe you check out the MPC 5000 manual. That gives you a good idea of what in detail the machine can do!

Best way to do it with the MPC5000 or MPC2500 is dirrect record.
Here is a video I put on youtube showing a example of dirrect recording.
