MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

hi there!
I just exchanged my mpc1k, an Alesis Ion and some cash for a brand new mpc5k: what a machine!
the synth section sounds great, and very much like the Alesis Ion. the modulation matrix has been replaced with a more classical design. the only things I miss is key follow for envelope time, and pwm controlled by envelope like in roland sh-101.
the new OS2 even loads the old AKP-programs of vintage gear, that I downloaded for my mpc1k back in 2005.
I found most of them for free at http://www.hollowsun.com
good hunting guys!

Is this the link directly: http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/index.html# ?

I use to download all of their free samples that were on this site years ago, but i have since misplaced them... will these load into the MPC pretty good or is there another page on this particular site that has some samples available that you are referring too

oops!
I didn't notice that most free downloads were for Alesis fusion nowdays :o
the sounds I downloaded a few years back were for Akai samplers, and included programs in AKP-format.
they are now packaged in librarys for sale, and no longer free. :?
who owns the right to those sounds from the beginning?
some of them were donated for free, if I'm not mistaken...
I have about 150MB of zipped files that were available in 2004-2005 at hollowsun.
they contain most of the vintage drummachines, synths and keyboards transformed into mpc1k or S-1000/3000/5000 programs.
To MPC Moderators:
Is there a chance that MPC-Forums could hold these sounds available on a server for mpc-users?

hm...that is a delicate matter, who owns the copyright of those sounds?
hollowsun has made a library for sale based on those samples, so do they own the rights?
I don't want to be dragged into court by beeing helpfull :?
I posted earlier the thought of placing them on mpc-forum if moderator wanted that. so far no response.
let's wait and see for a while 8)

UPDATE!!! I have spoken with Steve, at Hollowsun, and he is going to provide me with some information to share with you all momentarily

Also, he was very helpful and provided me with some more advice, so hopefully he will at least open up a few more sounds on his site that we may download and enjoy in the future.

***** here is the email

Hi,

About those old sounds.....

It started out as a little venture many years ago with a few sounds on it

for S5/6000 users. But gradually, more and more sounds were added. Then
people started contributing sounds and the whole thing grew and grew and
grew.

Trouble is, though, as with anything free, people were also taking the piss
and I was getting like 30,000 people downloading the entire lot every month,
people who didn't even own Akai S5/6000s but any sampler that could read
wavs. That's a lot of website bandwidth and it was getting very expensive

for me to run this 'free' service. It was costing me many hundreds of £UK to
keep this 'free' service going and frankly, I couldn't afford it any more.
What started off as nice little gesture became an expensive albatross around
my neck! I put a link at the site suggesting PayPal donations but just two
people donated - $15 in total!! Out of 30,000 people a month leeching the
site, just two people gave me 15 bucks!

Then some people started getting nasty asking me to zip the whole lot up in
one big file so they didn't have to inconvenience themselves downloading
each one separately so that they could pick the whole thing up in one hit
(also saying that they weren't interested in the samples' history - they
just wanted the sounds).

And people started asking why I didn't have XYZ instrument sampled and when
could they expect it. Other people started telling me which instrument they
wanted sampled and so on ... like I do this to order! So, what with the ever
growing cost and all the damned hassle from these whingeing leechers, after
4 years of free service, I (reluctantly) shut it down (which, of course,
caused even more hassle with abusive emails and threats I received, etc.,
some of which you wouldn't believe ... like threatening to come round to my
house and take them by force or reporting me to 'authorities' to have the
freebies re-instated with reference to 'human rights' and shit! There are
some serious loons out there, believe me!!).

Anyway....

It was at this time that I was approached by UK sound library developers

Zero-G who asked me what I was doing with the collection because they wanted
to distribute it as a new product. So they did in the form of a product

called 'Nostalgia', a Kompakt based sample player/VSTi. Even though

Nostalgia is currently not available as a product (although you can buy the
instruments from Zero-G for Kontakt I believe), copyright effectively exists

between Zero-G and myself now and I doubt very much whether Zero-G would
release it for free for MPC5000 users. I came to an agreement with Zero-G to
make some of the sounds available for the Alesis Fusion but only because
Fusion uses a proprietary sample format that can't be used by any other
sampler so is relatively safe from piracy and torrenting, etc..

So, sorry ... I can't make these available and it would be a contravention
of copyright for anyone who does have them from back when they were free to

re-distribute them now. Just because they were free back then doesn't mean
that they're free now. Things change and move on and anyone making them
available for free no would be doing so illegally.

Sorry about that.

But many, many thanks for contacting me about this and respecting my
copyright. I wish more people would.

If it's any consolation, now that the MPC5000 supports S5/6000 library in
V2.00, I will try and support that with some freebies. No promises as I have
a lot of paying work to attend to (which, in this day and age, is important
if I am to feed the family and pay the mortgage!!) but I may be able to
manage something at some point.

Watch this space!

Thanks again for your respectful approach to me about this matter. Much
appreciated here.

Cheers,

Steve
