Haven't stressed it yet. Much quiter, doesn't freeze like a normal drive would. As for speed it's hard to tell because I haven't used the standard internal drive.
I had a good deal and wanted something quiet and reliabel. To me it's worth it. If you don't care about the noise or freezes don't bother and wait for the prices to go down and buy 4! 2,5 inch drives.

Did you install a SATA drive into an IDE device? If so, what converter did you use?

Yes I did. I guess any 40 pin to sata converter will do will do. To be certain I bought several from different makes/chipset. Some have master/slave setting etc.. Just google it.
I'm not shure if it degrades the SSD, but for the MPC it doesn't realy matter because you're not using the drive for processing like a PC. Just read and wright. But Akai uses Fat32 which is a b!tch!!!!!! Makes transfering your library a drag!

I'm thinking of getting a ssd about 160gb also but im wondering the diff. in speed since it is going thru IDE
I know it will be quieter but thats a lot of money just to try.
The stock drive i have isnt very loud,It loads alright i havent checked to see if its 5200 or 7200rpm it is WD 80gb tho (copped this unit off the bay).Ill check like wednesday.
The ssd seems like it should read & write faster reguardless of the IDE converter cause theres no moving parts right?

The price of an SSD will always be an issue the next few years. You can do just fine with a fast 2,5 inch IDE or Sata laptop drive.
Sata to IDE does slow it down I guess. I haven't bench mark tested it nor googled it. I only cared about the noise and reliabilty of the drive. My MPC doesn't freeze much, but it can corrupt your drive while saving or loading. with SSD I don't worry too much.
I did notice when saving while playing a beat it doesn't slow down anymore.

Can you post what IDE to SATA converter your usin?
I dug up a sata 3.5 250gb 7200rpm last night,Just wondering i went to the local
frys and was looking at the IDE/SATA converter but i noticed the 40pin is male (looks like it plugs right into IDE drive).
Im thinking i need a female 40pin port so i can plug the mpc ribbon cable into the converter then sata out of the converter to the new sata or ssd sata correct?
Thanks -J

the ribbon in the mpc is female so you need a 40pin male converter for the ribbon AND powercord.

Be ware; With the Intel SSD transfering lots of files from PC to the SSD at once was a bit of a problem because of FAT32. Not certain but with a firm update for the SSD this could be solved. Only I don't know how to update the SSD as an external drive. Transfering lots of files at once I can only do with a Sata to USB converter.
Maybe other brands don't have this problem.

Found these IDE to Sata converters. (theres alot on the bay)
The 1st one looks like i can plug the 3.5 ribbon cable str8 into it,then sata out to the new drive.

The 2nd one well i opened up the 5k to see if i could plug directly into the board but looks like theres not enough room, theres the 8out board right on top of it like maybe 1/4" space between boards, would be nice to bypass the cable.

Imma just get a 500gb sata drive cant afford a ssd now, money is too low.

I guess even after the last o.s. upgrade I'm surprised the 5k is still having issues like it's having.
