Possible MPC5000 update mentioned at NAMM...

For sure, but why suddenty stop like that? Surely they must have known that a big update like 2.0, with all those new features, was going to need a follow up bug fix update pretty soon after. I can't imagine they assumed 2.0 was going to be 100% bug free, so they could just walk away from it immediately and focus on a different product.

It doesn't make sense to go to all that effort for OS 2.0 and to not plan to dedicate just a bit more time to clear up any bugs that inevitably were missed - they might as well have stayed on OS1 if that was the mindset.

What sort of price did people pay for the 5000 when it came out?

I think they were at least $2,000 street. I bought mine new from a private party for much less though.

I think they were initially £1200 in the UK for the bare unit, but I think that soon dropped to £1000.

That's top money for what state it has been left in. I'm sure I read somewhere that all the software engineers have since left, so I don't know how that will play into this situation?

Couple reason I can think of is 1k n 2500 was already dominating the market at that point. There was also no real incentive ( outside of built in synth, track recorder n pad cycle feature) for those who already had those machines to fork out another several hundred dollars to switch over. Now if they released revamped mpc4000 instead of 5,k things could have been much different. Not to mention JJ has already established his name at that time n offered more features for the buck to a conscious chstomer

Don't know if its occurred to Akai or Dan, why don't they get JJ to do an update for the 5000 it would solve their resource issue, would unite the community and from a marketing point if view jjos would sell his OS and akai would shift more units mpc5000se anyone? If jj was on board I'd buy one

I would also like JJ making his OS for this. I haven't used any of his software but from what I've hear I would really like to see what he could do the 5k. Man I would be so psyched if they announced for an update!!!

I believe that would mean that akai would then need to manufacture more... I doubt they want to make that mistake again... especially when they dont have direct control over the outcome of the only selling point (new OS)... plus, before JJ would likely consider it, enough of them would need to be in the hands of the consumer for it to be worth it... that means akai would need to make a version 3.0 os anyways just to be able to offload them. I dont see that happening either.

Yea an update would be great. I do believe Dan's intentions are good but I know from working in IT / Tech field, understaffed is the new normal since about 2008 in most every sector of business. I was at NAMM and some suit said "New products drive sales and breed business" ... That said we'll likely never see an existing product get the Dev attention that the new hot product gets. not even a fraction. Id love to see it happen but I think we better not hold our breath. The squeeky wheel gets the oil and right now REN users have center stage. Even Mike McRoberts said in our conversation ...

With the trend of hybrid groove boxes mostly relying on the computer to do the heavy lifting, do you think we will ever get back to stand alone boxes like MPCs, MV 8800s etc?

There will probably continue to be boutique manufacturers, like Roger Linn or Dave Smith, but it will be a smaller market. Artists that own a standalone box will continue to use them. It’s just more economical to develop a hybrid device.

Bottom line is the bottom line. we may never see an update to the 5k no matter how well intentioned our friend Dan is.

I'd like to see them do an update. But I've just about given up all hope of the direction this company is going. They and a majority of consumers have been taught to believe hardware is a thing of the past. Most of the younger guys want computers as the main piece of their " studio ".

Kids can't grasp the concept of Studio gear that will last a lifetime. I'm trying to buy as much old gear as I can. I'll own a 60, 3000 & rack gear when I have the room for it.

A month ago bought the mpc 5000. In the country where I live things is much more expensive than they are in the U.S.. Pay about $ 2000 used. I thought ... How bad can it be, this has to be better than 1000 and that it is very complicated errors to make a song. I tired to work this way. I'm an engineer insisting Akai and discussed the mistakes I'm finding as my English is bad is complicated to communicate clearly errors.
Now I will make a video that I can find errors and I'm going to pass in order to help and try to make this beautiful machine a joy as we have to be from the beginning.
I think it's the right time to get in campaign and work to find errors on our own, post them on this forum and to help the few engineers who are taking care of this matter, sending mail to Akai. It is the only way to pull this off. We are the only ones who can push for this to happen once.

There is a Facebook page that calls for the OS 3.0 could communicate by this means if more convenient.
