Piano Roll Editor???

hey guys.. i just wanted to ask the mpc 5k users if theres a piano roll editor in the 5k and if its possible to correct already recorded notes from a workstation.. lets say you hold a key 1/8 longer as you was supposed to, so is there a possibility to go in the editor and better it out, or would it be necessary to delete the recorded midi notes and rerecord your keys..?

I dont remember there being a piano editor. I know theres step edit and grid edit...

Yes, there is a Piano Roll Editor.

Your track TYPE must be set to MIDI in order to bring up the piano roll editor in GRID EDIT.

sorry to hijack this thread... but im trying to learn MPC technology without having to create new threads.

In the track type, what is the difference between Midi and Drum? I always use drum as default...

it's an unnecessary distinction found in all mpcs i've worked with
really silly to differentiate. i sequence all my internal sounds using MIDI tracks simply because a well programmed piano roll editor is a superior grid edit than grid edit is, therefor should not be associated by the OS specification ONLY with external gear...frustrating and unnecessary distinction.

it's like how programmers hang onto "general midi" program specification by default instead of the more sensible/widely used CHROMATIC note assignment. come on. it's 2008-9, fellas.

Well, bottom line is I use DRUM for...drums and MIDI for any sound that is chromatic. That could be the internal synth stuff or a sampled bass or keyboard program.

As pointed out earlier...The MPC 5000 (as well as other MPCs) gives you track type options. Setting a track to DRUM will give you access to the drum grid editior. Setting it to MIDI will bring up the Piano Roll editor. These are great options to have since everyone works differently.

Additionally, setting a track to DRUM or MIDI also changes the STEP and SEQ EDIT menus. Setting it to DRUM will show you the DRUM PAD NUMBERS. Setting a track to MIDI will display NOTE NUMBERS.

Originally (older MPCs) track types also effects that way TRANSPOSE works. Typically, you don't want to transpose your drum tracks. So setting a track to DRUM will disable the transpose. However, the latest MPCs this is not the case.

For info purposes....you can download the MPC 3000 manual and read about how Roger Linn/Akai improved how this was initially set-up with the MPC 60.
