Introduction:

If you haven’t noticed already, I am a huge supporter of Akai MPCs. This infatuation started back in 1994 when I was learning about gear and trying to get the best sound from the gear I could afford. I came across an interview on TV with Redman aka Funk Doc (Def Jam artist). He spoke about the use of the MPC 60 on his album. I couldn’t find information on an MPC anywhere. Fast forward to 1997 and I received a copy of American Musical’s Catalog with the MPC 2000 on the front cover. I purchased it immediately and have had an MPC ever since...upgrading with every new model (MPC 2000, 2000XL, 3000LE, 4000, 2500, and 5000).

I have been accused of being a loyal fan-boy despite of faults found in MPCs. This is completely untrue. Over the years, I have provided feedback through countless feature request threads and bug report threads across the internet and also emailing Akai directly. Key features I wanted have been included in the MPC 2500 (Akai and JJ OS) as well as the flagship MPC 5000 w/ OS 2.0. I enjoy using the MPC 5000 and wouldn’t trade it for any workstation that is currently available. Let me reiterate this. If I had no gear and wanted to buy one workstation today, the MPC 5000 would be my first choice. Akai has listened to feedback from forums, emails, telephone calls, etc. Forum members were even invited to beta test the OS. OS 2.0 is a huge leap forward. I hope that this type of relationship continues in the future.

There are still numerous feature requests that are out there that haven’t been implemented. Everyone should understand that it would be nearly impossible to include everything everyone wants. And even though the OS was heavily tested, there may be some issues that users encounter. It is nearly impossible to predict the thousands of different methods of use. So if anyone finds a specific problem, please report it in detail so Akai can address it. Now with all this said, I still can’t stop dreaming about features that I believe will take the MPC series or any workstation to another level. So after much thought, here are some additional features I personally would like to see in a future MPC (MPC 5000XL or 6000)….yes, another feature request thread:

Hardware
1. Phantom power
2. Add 8 pad bank buttons (use combination of Shift + pad bank buttons to access secondary functions)
3. MPC 2000-style jog wheel (inner and outer wheel) - the outer wheel moves the cursor position right or left such as the current Shift + L/R Cursor buttons
4. On/Off LCD button (or screen saver)
5. 360 degree Q-link knobs + 4 more sliders
6. Update the GUI to something more modern (see Motif XS and Fantom G and their colored screens)
7. Larger LCD (for showing more parameters on screen) and/or external VGA monitor support
8. Remove Arp Mode from pads (there is already an Arp button so it is not needed)
9. Support for internal SCSI or Sata drives (or any components that will improve load/save times)
10. Add multi-card drive (CF card, Smart Cards, etc)
11. Support up to 2 GB of modern RAM memory and/or access samples (sequence, edit, etc) directly from CF cards
12. ADAT input (to record on hard disk tracks)
13. MPC 4000-style power button (more difficult to accidently turn off unit)
14. Add 2 or more TRS INSERT inputs to allow users to plug in their favorite processors
15. Standard and/or ROM expansion board for onboard sounds available without being loaded (just like keyboard workstations)

Main
1. Add Import patch scripts like software sequencers
2. Split MIDI channel and output to two fields (example, when 1A is displayed, the cursor should be able to jump to 1 or A to make adjustments)
3. Add two MIDI channels/programs to track
4. Add Ram-based audio tracks

Now I would like to see these 88 features added without significantly changing the workflow. Using the MPC 5000 as the model, I think this could be done. Of course, I am no engineer and fully aware that it would take plenty of time to develop this product...or even perhaps nobody would want this product. But this is just my feedback…from the perspective of a customer that actually uses MPCs and will buy the next high-end MPC without question. Until such a device exists, I am off to enjoy my MPC 5000 with OS 2.0!

PS - For the record, I would buy any product similar to this regardless of who made it..which includes the new Roland MV or Linn/Smith's Linn Drum II.

Future mpc

1 Higher spec CPU.

2. Firewire or high spec USB3

3. Outside developers or joint venture with Ableton to develop new time stretching and high spec sampling engine. If you can`t beat them at least work with them.

4. Third party sample library support especially import exs, konkant, apple loops, and etc like the software world.

5. Streaming audio from the hardware and its a wrap.

6. Simplify step and grid editor gui like fruity loops alot of ease for working.

7. Work with an effects developer to make effects on par with others and sync settings for tempo and more presets in the effects.

8. Nondestructive editing of samples or audio regions if you get the streaming audio from hard drive down.

9. Include eq on the mixer page if possible filters are great but the added plus of eqs in the mixer page goes a long way.

10. A GUI to work with computer like other workstations have to even edit programs, samples, and the sequences using my computers moniter screen.

My two cents everything else you say it great.

Askia's list is on point. Almost exactly what I would want. I only disagree with the layer out and the only layer parameter I think is needed is sample offset and delay.

Other than that, I would add
-24bit with 32 bit float processing.
-Maybe an RPS function like the Fantoms with a mid clip board function with real time audition for clip import to track or RPS.
-Slice to midi clip on track or even arpeggio
-Softer pads and adjustable pad on threshold
-at least 16 adat outs

Forgot to add:

-mixer should be saved with songs and sequences so only programs and samples in mixer are saved.
-Real time time stretch with high quality algos
-16 level scales

I would agree that they should possibly explore taking maximum advantage of their partnership with Ableton. I am a sampler so I am in favor of any improvements in this area.

As far as layers, I would really like to see independant layers like the MPC 4000 has which also has outputs for each layer if my memory serves me correctly. But the outputs for each layer are not essential for me..

I also, I would favor ADAT and USB but not firewire. It just seems to many products on the market has or has had issues with firewire. I currently only have one firewire device which is the Digii 003R. The latency suks when compared with my RME PCI card w/ ADAT.

I definately concur with B-righteous re:

- Minimum 16 ADAT Outs (2x8 lightpipe). That way you can connect the ADAT outs to some DA converters and spit them into a mixing desk for outboard processing, effects, etc. That would be AWESOME.

- 24 Bit recording a must.

Also as stated,
- an mpc2000XL style jogwheel or similiar
- softer/more sensitive pads
- RealTime Timestretching via a knob/Qlink (just like how the roland Variphrase Elastic audio technology works in VP-9000)

Cough! Cough!

Seriously though, more memory, 16 audio outs (plus L&R), more realtime control over things like swing and tempo (including intelligent time-streching of loops) and built-in mastering capabilities are all I need. Put it all in an Ableton controller, like that one above, and Akai could name their price.

+1

I don't know why everyone is jumping on the firewire bandwagon. It's inferior to PCI. Besides, adat is a proven standard. It's simple and just works without having to worry about driver issues and added latency. Leave the driver coding to the sound card manufacturers that already know what they're doing. Most sound cards already support adat anyway.

USB is perfect for file transfer and midi controllers but horrible for audio and real time midi playing due to sloppy midi timing.

They should really work on a silent, and I mean absolutely silent unit. Passive cooling structure (no fan), solid state drive instead of traditional HDD etc.

Well, what about all the I/O in a breakout box? Can be rackmounted pretty close to interface, console, outboard = short signal path and only one cable going from the actual MPC to the breakout box instead of 6 MIDI, one USB, 10 analog audio, ADAT lightpipe etc etc. You get what I mean.

24/96khz would be a must!
True analog filters would be nice. Like Moog VCFs or something similar
Phantom Power is obsolete because what do you think they'll put in there as a mic preamp?!? Nobody looking for professional quality would use the internal preamp!

Cardreader would be a dope feature!

Patterns are cool, but some kind of linear sequencing would be nice, too.

xOx style programming would be a must for me and a larger colour screen like the one of the fantom. Some sort of card expansion for additional synthesis capability would be a good idea (like Roland's ARX boards).

The Ableton style timestretch engine would make it a great tool for live gigs.

And they should really use standard computer RAM which is cheap and easy to get everywhere! I mean 4 to 8 GB of RAM would be up to date, so you could really fire up some huge piano or string samples!

The MPC is quiet enough for me, I dont think i have ever had a problem with a loud MPC... maybe because we produce had high volumes... even when its silent, the lil bit of noise it does make, its fine, id rather have more futures then to worry about that...

The next MPC definitely has to be able to compete(price wise, hardware, and OS) with the Virtual Samplers and just computers period IMO
