MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

Hi people,

I just checked: both of these domains are still available. I'm pretty pissed of at the state of affairs regarding the MPC5000 (among other gear) and the lack of stable software (even in V2), the lack of updates and the lack of information.

Seems like Akai is ignoring us / pissing all over us, just because they can. NAMM has passed without a word, and a lot of forum member have splurged cash on a machine that (by some posts) can't even deliver the basic functionality.

I've got a mind to register the dontbuyakai domain, post a lot of testimonials, and send this out to music sites and blogs.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for the wonderful reply!

Yamaha users actually got Yammie to respond in a similar way because of the public exposure, and received not just an update to firmware that squished bugs but also a listening ear in the user forum - in the form of an engineer that subscribed and entered into dialog. But I guess working on my growing up would be more productive - maybe then I get to use the big f-words as well.

Sheesh...

Theoretically: yes. In practice, I can hardly find the time to make music as it is - the curse of the 30-somethings I guess - so before I start putting my time and energy into this effort I had liked to see if there is a platform for it in the community. At first glance this does not seem to be the case. Too bad. Another expensive toy to collect dust.

Sad but true man. I've emailed Akai a few times informing them of bugs. A year ago Andy replied once. Since he couldn't re-produce the bugs, they weren't deemed issues...Apparently, for those of us who have buggy OS', we got lemons. His replies were indicative of someone who clearly doesn't care about customers. He's just happy to travel around and promote Akai products with demonstrations of wack beats. And his sh*t IS wack-straight-up.

Then sell it and get something that works for you. :?
I thought we were done with these childish rants by now.
I guess it's pretty easy to create a new ID and re-up the nonsense.

This Community is about positive energy not negative energy.
Negativity is a waste on any level and b*tchin and bad mouthing is negative.

You just joined and claim you don't have time so when exactly was it that you
were supposed to learn enough about the 5k to see any problems?

what were your issues?

I've owned 4 MPC 5000's and I can say I only had an issue with one of them... Mind you, these issues didnt start occuring until after I installed the 192mb memory upgrade. The manual says to have the mem installed by a service center...

If it doesnt work, MAKE IT WORK or go use something else.

I think they just produced a few lemons, and some of us bought them. If installing the memory created problems, then we'd all be f*cked pretty much because I'm sure 70% of 5000 owners upgraded the RAM. If the memory is leaking, it's the OS's fault. Unless of course, all the RAM they sold us are lemon sticks. Wouldn't surprise me one bit...

I'm not a programmer so I can't 'make it work' when it freezes up. The only solution is rebooting-which is bullsh*t...

I am fortunate enough to be a problem free 5k owner ( 2 units ) and I agree that there are just some units that have issues. We went through the same thing with 4k's as well.
Since the memory is an Akai module it is possible that some memory could have issues.
Rest assure if I had a 5k that was giving me issues I would have simply returned it.
That's what you do when things don't work.
I wouldn't get caught up in all this drama for no reason.

do you have OS 2? If so, the person could have installed the memory incorrectly. Like i said, that was the only issue I had with 5000 I've owned.

The question is though, why hasn't Akai come forward and mentioned it-that it's very possible that some defective units were made? I'm sure they know, something is wrong given the backlash in the last year. They could have offered to have their technicians fix problematic units. Case in point: Kurzweil released a few PC3x workstations with a chord key press glitch. When a certain chord was pressed on a number of early release units, the D# wouldn't produce a tone. I had one of those units. Kurzweil fixed it for free for anyone having the defective boards. And Kurzweil is a small, struggling company. Akai on the other hand, don't offer anything-not even a peep about a possible OS upgrade. And who tested these units? Andy Mac?

Bro, I got a lemon-that's the only explanation. I know the memory is installed correctly. It's shows 192 every boot. I've tried wiping the drive, and reinstalling OS 2 a few times now. The jog wheel still isn't close to accurate, it still freezes, the screen still turns a bit white on one side after a few minutes and samples still act erratically. I got a lemon.
