MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

I'm trying to send my drumkit to my mixer over 8 separate outs (one for each sound) but I can't get it to work as it should because my sounds (samples and synths) don't pan all the way left or right, so there is always some 'interference' on another channel.

The logic is simple:
- kick to out LR (which goes to ADAT 1&2) panned LEFT
- snare to out LR panned right
- hats to out 34 panned LEFT
- claps to out 34 panned RIGHT
etc...

But the problem is that the snare, for instance, is faintly heard on the kick channel, and so on. Are any of you having the same problem? For the record, I'm not using or sending any effects, so these are not the cause of the problem. Also, in synth programs I set the 'spread' setting to zero. I just can't seem to pan hard left or hard right, which handicaps my routing (severely, in the case of synths).

Thanks,
Thomas

For clarity: I CAN pan left and right, but the sounds don't pan all the way left or right.

Your logic is flawed.
Stop using 12 34 56 78 and use 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.
You should use 12 34 56 78 for stereo sounds you want to send out the individual out.
In you case you should be using 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 instead of trying to pan within a stereo pair.

Excellent! I'd never even turn the dial past output 78 to see the individual outs, because I'd assumed that the MPC worked the same way in routing as most other gear and software I use. Cool.

Thanks for the helpful response, ntalec.

Have a nice weekend,
Thomas

p.s. I do think that hard panning should be complete hard panning (panning all the way to the left should not leave any sound on the right channel) but for me personally this won't be a problem anymore.

It all fits into how it has to be able to route stereo and mono samples to the same individual outs at the same time.
Basically they did it so that the output selection determines how it's position.
Hard left or right means put it in a mono output such as OUT 1.
A varied position means put it a stereo out such as 1/2 so you can position it across the sound field.
They did it this way to maintain proper panning law.

Just look at it as a fast shortcut for hard panning, instead of having to turn the panning knob all the way right or left you just put it in a mono output.
After a while you forget all about it.

I definitely like it! It's way faster and more intuitive to select a single output for a sound than to select a pair and use panning. +1 for the MPC.

I did detect on minor flaw: there are separate outs for 1 to 8, but not for L and R separately. You still need to pan hard left and hard right to separate these, and unfortunately they don't pan all the way, so you always hear some unwanted noise on either channel - well, not always, but in my particular setup I do.
