MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

Hi everyone, I am off to buy an MPC5000 this week, getting tired of being leashed to a computer, I find that I write very different tracks when I use a sequencer rather than staring at a screen. Have used MPC-60's and 2000XL's extensively on rock tours for the last 10 years, time to bring the MPC magic into the studio as well.

Can I ask, is the 5000 useful as a straight-ahead sampler like the Akai S series machines? What I mean is, can multi-samples be keymapped to create instruments that can be played off a keyboard, for instance a piano program? I have been trying out the MPC1000, and as good as it is, it can't do this function, it is set up for percussion samples rather than melodic sampling, it can't map a sample across a specific number of keys. I think that some versions of JJOS give the 1000 this functionality, but despite the fairly negative comments on the web about the MPC5000 I am going ahead and getting one, it looks like a great machine.

indeed it can. I've downloaded many s5000 sample / multisample libraries of various synths (mellotron, prophet 08, mek) and such to use with my MPC 5k. I've yet to make my own multisample patch but I've come across the function many times while using the MPC 5000.

edit
peep some of the va synth patches i made these tracks with... worth seeing what the built in VA is like

Hi,

It's my first post in this forum (new MPC 5000 owner) and already have a question. (No worries, won't clutter the forum up with endless newb questions.)

Where's a good place to find downloadable S5000 or specific MPC5000 libraries / programmes like those you have mentioned?
mellotron, prophet 08, etc.. other classic (analog/digital) synths, strings, e-pianos, fantom/motif etc. libraries would be cool to have access to directly on the MP without having to power up my DAW and VIs.

I have searched many many sites of commercial sample library mfgs and all I can find are libs of those same ole bs "platinum hip hop produca", "[famous producer] killa drums", etc.. with flashy bling covers to catch the attention of 5 year olds.

I don't want to immitate other artist signature sound and have my own decades old "killa drum" libs that keeps growing..

Also most of those "libs" are WAV only. Multisampled programmes I can load into the MP are rare.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks! Those I had already found.. will check the other links!
Any (almost) complete Fantom/Motif libraries that work with the 5k out of the box?

I copped the prophet08 samples from this ebay store

just choose your sounds set / synth samples and tell him you want em in s5000 format. they load in mpc5k perfectly. but they are memory hogs in some cases. Worked out for the time being but i eventually bought the DSI Mopho

Hey PSR, I listened to your VA synth noodles, they sound good - I had no interest in the VA when I bought the machine, haven't even turned it in, but now I think I will give it a go.... Really like the vibe of track 5, well done....

Yes JJ did add this but unfortunately it's not compatible to anything.
It doesn't read any libraries or create a format that something else can read.

As mentioned watchout for the size of the total PGM's some can be excessive since they are made with the thought a person will load them into a computer sample player.

Instead of looking for samples from the Fantom or Motif look for a Motif rack or a Sonic Cell. They can be had cheap and will give you the ability to play them, sample them or play yourself playing them.
I have yet to hear a sample set that sounds like the Motif or Fantom, they just tend to be Motif-ish or Fantom-ish.

Wow, got the '5000 yesterday, we have been using a 1000 with JJOS for the last 3 weeks, and all I can say is that thank god I did, (I almost bought a 1000 instead). The MPC5000 is absolutely awesome, for someone like me who deals with rock bands and concert production and electronic music via MIDI, this thing is brilliant.
