Just wondering since I will be getting a 5K soon if anybody here is still loving their 5K like the first day they brought it home or would you do things differently if you had the chance. Sorry if somebody already had a thread like this.

Hey there,

I can only speak from personal experience so I can't extrapolate or give you statistics - but from reading this forum it feels like there is a fair number of faulty machines. Then again, the users with good machines are more likely to remain silent while the ones with buggy machines might be 'over-representative'.

This being said, I have very mixed feelings. It is a great machine if and when it works. The features for the price are great - try finding a hardware sampler and sequencer with ADAT out these days!! But my machine is buggy. I bought it do build a steaming hot digital funk liveset, but after a month I realised that was out of the question. I don't want to be on stage with a machine that just hangs every now and then, and I did have a crash every day (during 2-3 hour sessions). For studio use it was very nice, although losing everything since the last save due to the occasional crash was annoying. After two months the crashes became more frequent and nowadays my MPC 5k is virtually unusable, and I will sadly return it to the store for warranty. I will however try to get a new and working one, since it works well in my setup. I love having 8 outputs, noise-free (because digital through the ADAT out) into my mixing desk, with just one cable. But even with a new one, I having nagging fears that one day all my programmed material will be useless because the MPC dies on me.

There you have it. Like I said, this is only my personal opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Cheers,
DL

After writing a 400 page book on it, I feel I know the thing inside out and while it's a beast, it's definitely the most frustrating MPC I own. It's crying out for an OS update on quite a few niggling features, and is poorly thought out in some areas where it's really dragging it's heals. I think the developers should have requested more input from the community over its features and workflow.

On the flip side, it has plenty of features that make it the first MPC I'd reach for when starting a new beat. In many ways, I still prefer working on the MPC2000XL, due to its creative simplicity, but the MPC5000 has the benefit of the 'all-in-one' solution, with loads more memory, the synth, hard disk recording, etc.

I don't think you'd regret getting the 5000, you'll be able to make great beats on it - I just think it would be nice to see the last remaining bugs getting some attention from Akai.

yeah but also... a lot of people do quite a bit of research before spending a couple of grand on a machine so I think most people who do get a 5000 and it is working properly... they wont regret it. the people who wind up with ones that dont work properly either try and swap it for a working one or get rid of it all together.

the nice thing about the mpc series is that you can always get a good chunk of cash back for your machine since they hold value quite well... they aren't like jaguar cars.

I really appreciate all the replies fellas. I've been researching the 5K like everyday and also checking the Akai site periodically to see if the new update has been posted. Hopefully JJ will come up with a OS if he can get his hands on the source code. One can wish right. I'm also happy that Tutor has finally finished the ebook so I can cop that asap!!! I think I'm still gonna take a chance and get one,but it it starts to act up I will take it back and get a 2500.

Along the lines of what Mr. Debauch says: I too will be trying to get my hands on another MPC, even after my bad experience with my machine, so there are definitely plenty of good things to be said about the beast, but I would very much stress the importance of making sure you can get a refund or warranty if it turns out to be buggy - because some machines really crash and burn.

Good luck!

Like you i had to had one regardless. I did lots of research and read lots of negative things ....and a few good things.

I've had occasional freezes and had to reformat it once. So backup your drive!!!!!!!
I love my 5000 eveyday! So no worries for me. As long there is no smoke coming out of the screen I'm good.

I do worry about a new OS ever getting released though!

Tutor, don't you have any pull with Akai or Numark? I mean, you created this site and this site clearly has been one the reasons why a lot of cats buy MPCs. They owe you man! Did they at least give you a free MPC? You're right, all the 5000 needs is to have some annoying bugs fixed and it would be a great box. It has potential. Akai should really do an OS update. They'd probably sell a few thousand more units easily.

Peace.

Second MPC in as many months and only after a few hours use another problem, and no sound. I can only find one other person with this problem via a google search but there's no solution posted to his problem. I was playing with the effects and suddenly a horrible buzz was created. Couldnt stop it so turned the unit off. When turned back on i get the following message: Effects engine failed to load. Checksum 2 is invald.' Then i get a second error message of '(FX Eng) Not Operational'. Does anyone know what this is and if it can be resolved without havn't to once again send back to Akai? I was buzzing from programing my first ever samples too, and have some cool beats saved and once again disappointment. Does this machine actually work for more than five minutes?!! I should stick with the reliable Electribes. Ok, any advice will be appreciated. Cheers Guys, or Gals.

I have no idea what causes the issue, but I dont see the harm in reinstalling the OS if that is possible for you to do... it may fix it you never know.

Cheers for your reply. How does one go about re-installing the OS?

Its seem odd after a maximum use so far of ten hours (if that) it breaks. I thought the 5000 had problems before v2 upgrade which i have not now. I feel like this thing is a pile of rubbish.

daveyp:

you do know that if you hear a sound that you don't like, you can press the stop button three consecutive times to make the sound and anything generating any kind of sound within the machine to stop.

hopefully you tried this before simply shutting it off.
