i bought the mpc5k when it first came out, and upgraded to os 2.0 as soon as it was released, ... i have had no problems what so ever.
... none.
my mpc is completely stable. actually, ... it seems much more stable in os 2.0, .... i think i can remember maybe a few weird things in 1.0, ... like re-recording too many takes in HD record mode,
but in 2.0, ... i have never ever ever ever had any problems of any kind.
of all the feature requests out there, the only one i might be interested in would be to make chop shop work, ... that is the only bug i've ever had, ... but outside of that one thing, ... absolutely nothing holds me back.
also, ... anyone who is not satisfied with the synth makes me laugh, .... in that case, ... should a poly-moog be fully built into this thing without additional costs?
all of those requests should be voided.
the 5k is by far the best mpc i've ever owned, ... "especially the sequencer and most definitely the sound", ... i've owned 1k and 2kxl, .... and also mv8k in the past.
... none.

Mine's crashed 2 times due to having a lot things going on (samples, sequences, lots of tracks). Just the other day though, I only had a 1 bar drum pattern and it crashed. It was being really weird, lagging when I would press buttons. I opened it up, got a little dust out, and it hasn't crashed again, but the lag still comes and goes. I'm going to reinstall the OS2, hopefully that will help.

When the OS 2 came out i waited to see the comments and how it is... then i saw alot of bad comments about the OS 2. So since i didnt have much problem with OS 1, i just thought why upgrade if everything is good. Ofcourse theres alot of new things u can do on the OS 2, but im all good with what i have.

I believe there are more ppl with stable 5k's than not. I've had it for a year now and its been stable. It crashed once but admittedly I was doing some complex routing of efx and synths and input thru and lots of memory and cpu used. Any mpc (or any machine for that matter) would've crashed under the pressure. still and all its been stable and I love it dont be skewed by the negative chatter about the 5k. go buy it.

As the owner of an unstable MPC5000 I would just like to say this: I'm afraid it's impossible to tell if the MPC5k is stable or not. You can't judge from the opinions voiced here on this forum - people with complaints are usually more vocal than satisfied customers so forums like this aren't representative for the truth. However, it's safe to say that there are some buggy machines out there. Wether there are more than there 'should be' remains open for debate, but it doesn't really matter. Just make sure that your purchase is covered under warranty so you can have it fixed in case of issues, and do test the machine thoroughly so you don't discover problems after the warranty expires.
Apart from my purely personal issues with my personal MPC I love working with it - and I love the synth too, actually.
Good luck!

No, it's not completely stable. Today I was working on some loops for the site and managed to crash the unit twice - 'veng error' or something like that (was too angry to care at the time) and then a complete lock out when going into the REC SAMPLE screen, plus had a number of of odd moments in TRIM and DISK - in fact, I managed to get a full lock out while previewing a file in DISK.
All completely unrepeatable though - not the first time with the preview issue, but it seems random. Anyway, the key is to SAVE, SAVE , SAVE as often as possible. PITA of course. I don't think I'd be confident using it in a live situation - MPC2000XL would be the one for me if I wanted stability.
As for speed of fixing bugs, the last bug I officially submitted to for the 5000 was in July 2010 (the V>Att function is applied the wrong way). This hasn't been fixed. None of the 2.0 bugs mentioned on this forum have been fixed, and it's now nearly 2 years since the last OS update.
If you want fast OS updates, grab yourself an MPC2500 or 1000 and install JJOS2XL/XL into it. That guy doesn't sleep in offering new features and rapid bug fixes.

Arent you guys in the UK entitled to a refund? You guys should start returning your units. Hopefully Akai will wake up and fix the rest of the bugs. Class action lawsuit?

In the UK, if something isn't fit for purpose, it can be returned for a full refund within a reasonable amount of time, say, a few weeks (basically the time it takes to give the machine a decent workout). After that, you are entitled to a repair or exchange (or the retailer can choose to refund you).
Manufacturer warranty is 12 months, but that's just in addition to your consumer rights. Consumer law gives you up to six years to return a product for repair or exchange, depending on what it is.
However my experience is that many retailers will say 'software issues are not covered by warranty' - that's not true at all, but most people blindly accept it. Again, remember that manufacturer warranty has nothing to do with your consumer rights. However to ultimately enforce those, you need to put in a lot of effort, small claims, trading standard etc, so most people don't bother.
Also note that in the UK, your contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer, so in theory, your dealings should be with the shop you bought it from.
