Hmmm. for their hardware sampler line, the Akai S-612 is their first generation.... It was released in 1986.

It was a COMPLETE pain in the arse - but quite fun too. It had to sliders to set the start and end points of your sample ...and an add-on rack to store your discs!

Ahhh 2.8 QD bliss! I had the S-612 and S10 too. I remember the 2.8 QDs costing almost $30/10. With only 1 second per side , there was no "less is more" grandstanding.

I do remember the sample rate could lowered to the point that the sound was almost unrecognizable.
