most computer programs are now 24bit - and would think in a couple of years will go over to 32bit.
so what's going on the MPC4000 was 24bit - why are AKAI releasing a flagship MPC with a lower bit rate?

MPC4000 is not 24 bit it is backwards compatible!

umm are you stupid???

all 4ks are 24bit 96k the 4k plus means it comes with the spdif/wordclock optrion nothing more

all 4k sample at 24bit 96k and play back 24bit 96k

anyway 7 1 4 Beats what do you think?

thanks for the misinformation 7 1 4 Beats ??? - maybe you were confusing bits with beats

Co-sign...And since y'all katz are hearing this from current 4k users, yes the 4k does 16 & 24 bit recording (with three (3) sampling rates to choose from). It's the only MPC that does this. It's amazing that this is coming to light with a lot of folks even after this unit has been on the market for a couple of years now.

I voted 24 bit in support of the MPC 4000 users. However, 16 bits is fine for a drum machine and sequencer. In the unlikely event that I can't live without a 24 bit sampler, I will just reach in my plug-in list, like everybody else.

I think it should have both 16bit and 24bit. **** what an ol' school MPC user thinks..."Oh you gotta get that gritty sound" **** outta here its 2008

I want to have a choice. 16bit or 24bit. It should have BOTH damnit!!

Is 16 bit "gritty" now?

Of course it was the right move for THIS machine. They have no intention of touching the actual sample engine core, they want to be able to drop the previous code in, add a few new features and ship it. Saved you all a bunch of money. If you need quality, go to the 4000 (for more reasons than just the bit rate). If you are just chopping up mp3 loops and using grimy drum kits, 16bit is plenty.

The decision was probably made due to the amount of RAM they included.

A 24bit phrase sampler would have needed more RAM for bigger projects.

They should have included more RAM and made it 24 bit.

Still the 5000 looks real nice.

I would have rather seen 24 bit as well.

Where 16 bit gives you 65,536 possible recording levels, 24 bit gives you 16,777,216 possible levels in one slice of an audio recording (1 sample).
It is easy to understand what this means for dynamics when using effects and when mixing.
And there is just much more headroom when recording at low levels.

But I guess most people just don't care.

You know, it is getting to be difficult to even find the small DIMMs that are used in these machines. Last week I bought 3 GIGABYTES of DDR RAM for about $100. That's retail price, and that's 15 times more RAM than the 5000 can hold, and the clock on the memory I bought was 667MHz.

I really like MPCs, I think they are a great music-making tool. But Akai is helping to make them obsolete, IMO, by neglecting to keep them up-to-date technologically. And of course they make a joke out of customer loyalty by releasing a 'flagship' that can neither load nor play the sounds of the old flagship.
