Midi Routing: USB Midi w. Ren

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Trying to connect my Nord Stage 2 via USB to the Ren...

I've ensured the cables etc are working because the Nord sends and receives Midi perfectly via Logic.

However, with the Ren, the MPC receives Midi but I can't get it to send to the Nord....

I got it to work once by using port C, but I'm not able to get it work again.

Any suggestions as to how it should be set up?

PS, I'm on a Mac, I've used the Audio/Midi configuration, but I'm not sure how that should work, as the Nord is recognized as "Generic USB Midi Device" and it will not allow me to cable it to the Ren....

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Are you setting one of the four MIDI Out Ports (A/B/C/D) to send to the Nord, in MPC Software Preferences/MIDI/MIDI Mapping?

Are you then setting an MPC Software sequencer track to Type:Midi, and whatever Port letter (A/B/C/D) that you set to be the Nord MIDI Out Port above?

Hi, I'm not using the MIDI out, I'm using the USB out, so I'm not sure what the port setting should be for that.

Also, the Nord doesn't show up in the MPC Software, except as Generic USB MIDI Device.

But yes, in the software, I am setting the track as a MIDI track, and I've tried just about every combination of Port letter and channel I can think of.

You have to map one of the four MPC MIDI Out Ports (A/B/C/D) to send MIDI out to the Nord, through USB if that is how you have it connected.

You have to send MIDI from the MPC MIDI track to that MIDI Out Port letter that you map to the Nord.

If the Nord appears as 'Generic USB MIDI Device', then you have to map that to one of the four MPC MIDI Out Ports (A/B/C/D), and select that port in the MPC MIDI track settings.

OK, I'm sure I'm pretty dense, but I'm not getting it.

I can see that the MIDI outs are clearly labeled on the hardware. But, the USB, what MIDI ports are the USB?

Under the "Midi Mapping" it gives me a preference to each one of the MIDI outs (A,B,C, or D) and then asks me to select... am I supposed to select the "DESTINATION" that I want the MIDI to go to, or is that the SOURCE I want the MIDI to go from?

But I'm not sure if the USB's are MIDI out 1,2,3 or 4..... does this make sense?

The four MPC MIDI Out Ports (A/B/C/D) are virtual ports within the software, they are not physical MIDI ports.

You have to map the virtual MPC MIDI Out Ports (A/B/C/D) to actual MIDI destinations.

In your case, you have to map one of those four virtual ports to send MIDI to the Nord USB MIDI interface.

You are saying that the Nord USB MIDI interface appears in your computer as 'Generic USB MIDI Device', so set one of the four virtual ports to send MIDI to 'Generic USB MIDI Device', for example, make MIDI Out Port A = 'Generic USB MIDI Device'.

Then on an MPC MIDI track, set it to send MIDI to MIDI Out Port A, which will send it to 'Generic USB MIDI Device', which should be the Nord USB MIDI interface.

So, does that man that there are only a total of 4 MIDI outs, even though there are 6 physical outputs (2 USB and 4 MIDI out)?

Yes, MPC Software can only utilise 4 MIDI outputs at one time, through those 4 mapped virtual MIDI Out Ports.
